Lionel Richie has reportedly been hospitalized after suffering a medical emergency on stage Wednesday night.
Richie was performing a rendition of “Dancing on the Ceiling” in St. Paul, Minnesota when he apparently abruptly sat down.
According to video shared by fans online, Richie said, “What I have learned about my years of being in the business. When you are feeling dizzy, sit you’re a– down. And when you are feeling strange about yourself, sit you’re a– down!”
He continued, “Now, I want you to know, that’s the first time in the history of ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ I’ve done it sitting down. That’s a bad sign, y’all!”
Richie sat at a piano for “Three Times a Lady,” but the concert ended shortly after that, per The Minnesota Star Tribune.
After an unexpected intermission, saxophonist Dino Soldo came on stage and told the audience Richie would not return.
“Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well. He won’t be able to continue with the show,” he said. “And additional information will be available. Thank you for your patience, and your understanding.”
Local authorities told Page Six they “did transport an adult male from the arena last night to a local hospital.”
Richie’s current condition has not been shared by the “American Idol” judge’s reps.
Wednesday was the opening night of Richie’s tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. Prior to the show, Richie posted on social media sharing his excitement for the show.
“A perfect way to start the tour!! Feeling grateful!! See you tonight, Saint Paul, MN,” he wrote in the caption for a behind-the-scenes video.
