With season two of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series now out, a comparison of new characters entering the picture to their animated counterparts may be in order.
Several well-known actors plays guest roles as smaller characters from the animated show, such as Arden Cho in season one and Severance star Dichen Lachman in season two, to name just a few.

Aang (Gordon Cormier)

Aang is the leader of the group in the show as the young avatar who froze in an iceberg and disappeared while the Fire Nation turned to tyranny. Gordon Cormier plays the airbender in the live-action series on Netflix, and Zach Tyler Eisen voiced him. Eisen also voiced Pablo in The Backyardigans.
Katara (Kiawentiio)

Katar is Sokka’s younger sister, and she can water-bend like no other. Kiawentiio plays Aang’s water-bending teacher in the Netflix show. Mae Whitman, who portrayed Bianca Piper in The Duff and Mary Elizabeth in The Perks of Being A Wallflower, voiced Katara in the animated series.
Sokka (Ian Ousley)

Sokka is Katara’s older brother. He doesn’t possess any bending skills, but he does know his way around weapons, and he has a trusty boomerang. Ian Ousley plays the somewhat annoying brother in Netflix’s show, and Jack De Sena voiced the character in the Nickelodeon series.
Toph Beifong (Miyako)

Toph is one of the most beloved characters in the story. She is a blind earth-bender, and she becomes Aang’s earth-bending teacher in Season 2 of both shows. Miyako portrays Toph in the live-action series, and Michaela Jill Murphy voiced her in the Nickelodeon version.
Zuko (Dallas Liu)

Prince Zuko is heir to Ozai’s throne as leader of the Fire Nation, but as viewers see in Season 1, he was banished from his father’s palace until he tracked down the lost avatar. Dallas Liu portrays Azula’s older brother, who has one of the most complex character arcs in the story, in the Netflix series. Dante Basco is known for voicing Zuko in the animated show.
Azula (Elizabeth Yu)

Elizabeth Yu portrays Azula, Zuko’s younger sister who is bloodthirsty and learns to bend lightning and blue fire, true to her name, in the Netflix show. Grey DeLisle voices the character in the animated series.
Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim)

Daniel Dae Kim fills the shoes left behind by voice actor Mark Hamill portraying Fire Lord Ozai, father of Zuko and Azula, in the Netflix series. Kim is also known for playing Jin-Soo Kwon in Lost, Jack Kang in Insurgent (2015) and Major Ben Daimio in Hellboy (2019) as well as Chin Ho Kelly in Hawaii Five-0.
Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee)

Iroh is Ozai’s older brother, and he is also known as the Dragon of the West. But he has given up the aggressive lifestyle of the Fire Nation for a love of tea and peace. He has never-ending wisdom.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s Convenience), portrays Zuko’s uncle in the Netflix show, and Mako voiced him in Nickelodeon’s series.
Suki (Maria Zhang)

Maria Zhang portrays Suki, a Kyoshi warrior, in the Netflix series. In the animated series, she and Sokka fall in love after his heartbreak over Princess Yue. Jennie Kwan voiced Suki in the Nickelodeon show.
Joo Dee (Amanda Zhou)

Joo Dee is the guide to Ba Sing Se, but she is a bit brainwashed. Amanda Zhou plays her in the Netflix series, and Lauren Tom voices the creepy character in the animated show.
Ty Lee (Momona Tamada)

Ty Lee is a master at pressure points in the body, and she is portrayed by Momona Tamada in the Netflix series. Olivia Hack voices the acrobat in the animated show.
Mai (Thalia Tran)

Thalia Tran portrays one of Azula’s cronies, Mai, in the Netflix series. Mai (voiced by Cricket Leigh) has a crush on Zuko in the animated series. She’s also good with projectile weapons.
Princess Yue (Amber Midthunder)

Princess Yue was Water Nation royalty, and she and Sokka had a connection, but her death plays a big role in the Season 1 finale because she was healed by the moon spirit. Aang embodies the other spirit to wreak havoc on Commander Zhao (Ken Leung) and his Fire Nation troops when they tried to destroy the Fire Nation.
Amber Midthunder portrays Yue in Netflix’s live-action show, while Johanna Braddy voiced her in the animated series.
King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar)

King Bumi was the same age as Aang until Aang got frozen in an iceberg. At first, Aang things Bumi is meant to be his earth-bending teacher in season two, but Bumi encourages Aang to find someone who is a master of neutral jing.
Kevin Ng voiced Bumi in the animated series, and Utkarsh Ambudkar, who is known for CBS’ Ghosts and for appearing as Manish Kulkarni, Devi’s English teacher, in Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever on Netflix.
June (Arden Cho)

Arden Cho made a guest appearance in season one as June, a tracker whose animal companion can find any scent, even in the spirit realm. Jennifer Hale voiced June in the animated show.
