A capacious and velvet-lined library brimming with ensorcelled stories, the tomes of times long gone, are an oft-visited location in several classic fantasy and horror novels.
Books, in short, are central to these spirited and spooky stories, but finding a fantastical festival devoted to such tales, or at least possessing a strong whimsical or weird element, can be as challenging as inventing a peculiar and powerful potion.
Sometimes, however, spellbound story-centered celebrations do materialize, and two such happenings are adding an October-style spirit to the most magical month.
Rare Books LA Antiquarian Fair is up first with a weekend-long event at Union Station Oct. 4 and 5.
The star of the show is one of the most “lit” stories in all of literature, the oh-so-electrifying “Frankenstein.” Complimentary talks exploring this terrifying titan of the genre, and other Frankly entertaining focuses, will festoon the weekend.
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” coming to Netflix in November, will be in the spotlight.
And a special Oct. 3 fundraiser in Hollywood will give additional love to Mary Shelley’s moving and monstrous realm, a place fans return to again and again to consider questions swirling around nature, invention, and mortality.
Tickets and information are available at Rare Books LA.
The following Saturday — that’s Oct. 11 — the Enchanted Realms Book Festival will alight at the Autry Museum of the American West in Griffith Park.
You don’t need to saddle up your dragon for the flight over to the Autry lawn, but you will want to RSVP ahead of time and secure your ticket at this site.
All sorts of wand-wielding, fairy-fabulous, gnome-esque novels will be in the swirl, plus the ethereal opportunity to show off your favorite cosplay look.
Wing by this site, which is sparkling with the knowledge you need to attend, now.
