With roundabouts popping up more frequently in Athens and surrounding areas, it was only a matter of time before someone had the idea of putting artwork in the middle of one. Now, Athens-Clarke County is looking to work with an artist for ideas on what the art should look like.
The local government on Wednesday, Sept. 24, issued an invitation for professional artists to submit qualifications for a large-scale “3D artwork” for the Tallassee Road roundabout. Like most calls for public art in Athens, finalists will be chosen based on their qualifications rather than where they are located.
The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, and details can be found at accgov.com/11628/Call-for-Public-Art-Tallassee-Roundabout.
What are the qualifications for a professional artist?
To be considered by the city selection panel, applicants must have a resume highlighting their credentials and related experience, provide contact information for at least three professional references, and include JPEG images of three examples of previous work of comparable scale and budget. The selected artists, or team of artists, will work with stakeholders and government staff to create the artwork.
Who is on the selection panel for public art?
Public art selection panels are made up of community members who live in Athens-Clarke County and are over the age of 18. If you would like to serve on the selection panel for the next public art installation, the sign-up form and details about the meetings can be found at accgov.com/FormCenter/Athens-Cultural-Affairs-Commission-36/Public-Art-Selection-Panel-Form-654.
