New Balance’s summer-ready mule spin on the 9060 isn’t the only new variation of the brand’s popular lifestyle sneaker. The everyday favorite model has also just received an aesthetic update known as the 9060R, which is available in two styles.
The New Balance 9060R maintains many of the details fans of the standard 9060 know including its distinct dual-density Abzorb and Abzorb SBS midsole.
But up top, the upper has been reworked by New Balance designer Gabriel Pimentel, who added saddle mesh, split vamp overlays and an extended mudguard with debossed details in what the Boston-based sportswear company describes as “authentic New Balance DNA.”
The resulting design gives the consumer-favorite 9060 a sleeker appearance, which clashes with its otherwise bulky proportions.

Despite the popularity of the standard 9060, the updated 9060R was released without a marketing rollout, instead arriving quietly on the company’s e-commerce store.
New Balance introduced the 9060 at retail in May 2022 through a two-sneaker “Inside Voices” collaboration with Joe Freshgoods. In the years since, the cushioned sneaker has become a lifestyle staple with countless in-line colorways and other coveted collaborations with the likes of Bricks & Wood and Mowalola.

And the 9060 is far from the only new lifestyle hit New Balance has introduced in recent years. The brand’s low-profile 204L, along with the retro-futuristic Abzorb 2000 and Abzorb 2010, have all had varying degrees of success at retail and on the secondary resale market.
Debuting in synthetic and patent leather colorways, the New Balance 9060R is set to be released in several additional iterations throughout 2026 including suede-based styles.
