4th October 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will remain in force until at least noon tomorrow as Tropical Cyclone Matmo continues to approach the Leizhou Peninsula. Over the past few hours, Matmo has maintained a steady movement towards the region, bringing strong winds across many areas. Offshore and elevated locations have experienced occasional gale-force winds.

According to the latest forecast, Matmo is expected to come closest to Hong Kong during the early hours and morning tomorrow, passing more than 300 kilometres southwest of the city. Unless the gale-force winds move closer to the Pearl River Estuary, the likelihood of sustained gale winds across Hong Kong remains low.

Under the influence of Matmo’s rainbands, the weather tonight and early tomorrow will feature occasional squally showers, thunderstorms, and violent gusts. Rough seas and large swells are also expected. Members of the public are strongly advised to avoid shoreline areas and to refrain from engaging in water sports to ensure their safety.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained wind speeds recorded at Cheung Chau Beach, Waglan Island, and Tate’s Cairn were 71 km/h, 66 km/h, and 63 km/h, respectively. Meanwhile, maximum gusts at these locations exceeded 89 km/h, 75 km/h, and 82 km/h.
