It looks like the future of Barbie 2 is still up in the air.
Three years after Barbie became a global phenomenon and the highest-grossing movie in Warner Bros. history, the highly anticipated sequel has reportedly hit a major roadblock as negotiations remain at a standstill.
According to multiple reports, Warner Bros. has yet to finalize deals with the key creative team behind the blockbuster, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, director Greta Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach. Until those agreements are reached, work on the sequel cannot move forward.
The delay comes with added pressure. Warner Bros. reportedly has until December to secure the necessary agreements before the sequel rights revert to toy giant Mattel, which owns the Barbie brand.
Reports also suggest negotiations have stalled over salaries and profit participation. While Warner Bros. has reportedly offered larger paydays for the film’s stars, the two sides have yet to reach an agreement. Meanwhile, Gerwig and Baumbach are said to be holding off on sharing their story idea until contracts are finalized.
The original Barbie became a cultural sensation following its 2023 release, earning more than $1.4 billion worldwide and receiving eight Academy Award nominations. The film also helped propel Gosling’s performance as Ken into awards season, earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
While neither Warner Bros. nor the filmmakers have announced that a sequel has been canceled, the latest update suggests fans shouldn’t expect Barbie and Ken to return to the big screen anytime soon.
