Today weather presenter Tim Davies is hanging up his hat and departing the breakfast show after seven years.
Davies confirmed the news on Friday morning, with his final forecast to be read on September 18.
A replacement is yet to be announced
On location on the sunny Gold Coast on Friday morning, he was emotional sharing the news with viewers.
“For more than 7½ years, I’ve had the great honour of greeting you of a morning with your daily forecast, most often from some of the most remote or picturesque places on our planet,” he said.
“I’ve had the job of highlighting local heroes, sharing really good news stories, showcasing communities, clubs, schools and various organisations across this big brown land of ours.
“And gee whiz, we have clocked up some kilometres in doing that, both on the ground and in the air, appearing from somewhere completely different.”
He recalled the adventures he undertook during his seven-year tenure on-screen, some of which he never imagined.
“Pretty much every single day I have jumped, I have dived, I have skied, I have zipped, dipped and flipped. You name it, I have done it,” he said.
“And most importantly, I survived to tell the tale, which I think is important.”
Davies also offered a heartfelt thanks to the Today viewers.
“Thank you for allowing me into your homes and into your lives each morning. Your feedback, good and bad, are the random chats, mostly at airports and sometimes in the supermarket,” he said.
“Being the lucky one on our team to be out and about with you every day. I’ve had the most amount of time engaging with our incredible audience, and that has by far been one of the greatest highlights of this role.”
The Today co-hosts appeared heartbroken as Davies shared the news.
“Timmy … beautiful words, mate, but we’re not very happy about this,” entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins said.
Amid a loud applause from the Today studio, the co-hosts assured the weather presenter they would give him a “big send-off” for his final day in September.
“And a big party at Dickey’s (Richard Wilkins) house,” co-host Sam Armytage joked.
In a statement from Nine’s morning television director Steven Burling, Davies “leaves enormous shoes to fill”.
“During his time, he’s given a platform to small towns and communities, showcasing their people and causes to a national audience, and that will leave a lasting impact,” he said.
“We are fully supportive of Tim laying down some roots after seven years of living out of a suitcase.
“I’d like to thank Tim for all he’s contributed to the show. I know the team and the audience will greatly miss him.”
