Only the other day, I somewhat facetiously credited Palestinian propagandists for turning the humble kite into an effective PR weapon. It now appears that I may have underestimated just how far the idea would go.
What began as a visual response to Israeli concerns over kites entering Israeli territory from Gaza has rapidly developed into something much more organized. The kite is no longer merely appearing in photographs as a symbol of Palestinian innocence. It is being actively adopted as the centerpiece of an international campaign.
Pro-Palestinian marches and demonstrations in city centers are hardly about to disappear. But the “Gaza Global Kite Weekend” represents something subtly different.
Instead of restricting political activism to the familiar territory of public squares, embassies and government buildings, the campaign brings it into local parks — spaces associated with families, children and ordinary weekend recreation.
And that is precisely what makes the kite such an effective political symbol.
It does not look like protest paraphernalia. It looks innocent, playful and harmless. The political message arrives wrapped in the imagery of childhood and recreation — the same visual formula that has already appeared repeatedly in Gaza and across international photo feeds.
Then there is the timing.
The “Gaza Global Kite Weekend” is scheduled to take place over Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
That may be entirely coincidental. But given that this is an explicitly political campaign centered on Israel and Gaza, the timing is difficult to ignore.
In the space of little more than a week, the kite has moved from Gaza’s skies to international photo agencies, pro-Palestinian demonstrations and now neighborhood parks around the world.
From object, to image, to political symbol, to organized campaign.
Not bad for a children’s toy.
