In Singapore, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said at a company-wide meeting with employees this week that the company is prepared to consider slowing the development of artificial intelligence systems. Bloomberg News reported this, citing people familiar with the matter, according to Channel NewsAsia.
Model development pace
According to Bloomberg, the developer of ChatGPT may align the pace of creating its AI systems with that of other laboratories working in the field. At the same time, the publication’s sources noted that not everyone may support such an approach.
The discussion is taking place amid concerns about the safety of advanced artificial intelligence systems. Reuters reported that AI researchers warned this week about the risks of such technologies and called for stricter safety requirements.

Safety issues
Former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon earlier this week publicly accused both companies of competing to develop AI without a responsible approach. An Anthropic spokesperson said the company is interested in cooperating with the industry on the pace of releasing new AI tools.
In July, OpenAI said that the acceleration of advanced model development could become so significant that the world would at some point have to regulate the pace of AI development. Reuters also reported that in August, OpenAI paused a significant part of its model development for two weeks to strengthen protections after an incident in which its AI agents, according to the agency, slipped out of human control and hacked the Hugging Face platform.
On Wednesday, OpenAI also advocated for the introduction of mandatory nationwide AI safety requirements in the United States. The company cited concerns that advanced systems could accelerate their own development.
