Political tremors were felt across Europe this week after the far-right Alternative for Germany party took first place in local elections in Saxony-Anhalt. The state is struggling with high-ish unemployment and a declining, aging population, the kind of conditions that far-right parties everywhere thrive on, so AfD’s victory should have come as no big surprise. Still, the election is an omen for things to come in much of Europe over the next year or so.
