The fate of Dexter: Resurrection has finally been revealed by Showtime. The original Dexter debuted in 2006 and ran for eight seasons, with its first several seasons receiving positive reactions from critics. However, some of the final installments received Rotten Tomatoes scores that dipped below 40%.

The success of Dexter led Showtime to greenlight a spinoff called Dexter: New Blood, which only lasted one season. A prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, was initially renewed for a second season, but then Showtime reneged and decided to cancel the show instead.

However, that didn’t stop network executives from making another attempt at expanding the franchise. Dexter: Resurrection premiered in the summer of 2025, with the finale airing just over a month ago on September 5.

Showtime just announced that Dexter: Resurrection has now been renewed for a second season. The Dexter X account shared the exciting news by teasing, “The story continues.”

The post included a video of Michael C. Hall, who plays the titular character, thanking fans for watching Resurrection before announcing the renewal news. The actor added that the writers’ room is “assembling now” and teased that more info will come in due time.

Dexter was an immediate hit for Showtime when it began in 2006, so it didn’t come as a surprise that the network created a franchise.

The first spinoff, Dexter: New Blood, picked up a decade after the original series, with Hall and Jennifer Carpenter reprising their characters. The series shockingly ended with Dexter’s death, forcing Showtime executives to end the show and develop Original Sin, which allowed them to revive the character since the show was a prequel.

Excitement was high when Dexter: Resurrection was announced because it meant that Hall would be back as Dexter. There was also some confusion since the character supposedly died at the end of New Blood. The gunshot incident was explained away as not being fatal.

Dexter: Resurrection amassed higher ratings than Original Sin and New Blood, which is clear proof as to why Showtime has renewed the show for a second season. Dexter survived the Resurrection season 1 finale, which means the forensic technician-turned-serial killer’s story can continue into season 2.

Uma Thurman, Jack Alcott, David Zayas, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, Emilia Suárez, James Remar and Peter Dinklage starred alongside Hall on Dexter: Resurrection.

While it’s unknown which cast members will return, aside from Hall, it seems a given that Zayas will not be back following his character, Angel Batista’s death, though flashbacks could be a way to bring back the actor.

Hall’s character makes some absolutely atrocious decisions on Dexter, but he’s a fan-favorite antihero who makes for captivating television. With great ratings and a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, anticipation will surely be sky-high whenever Dexter: Resurrection season 2 airs.
