Miley Cyrus‘ latest chart triumph has taken an unexpected turn, transforming a hard-fought No. 1 debut into a Billboard record she likely never intended to claim.
“Bass Persuades,” her first album with Atlantic Records, initially edged out the competition by a narrow margin and earned Cyrus a milestone she celebrated publicly.
One week later, however, the album’s dramatic plunge has rewritten the record books, giving Cyrus a distinction previously held by some of music’s biggest female stars.
Miley Cyrus’ No. 1 Debut Quickly Became A Billboard Record
The sharp reversal came after “Bass Persuades” opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on September 28, selling approximately 61,000 album units through a combination of physical sales and streaming.
The debut put Miley Cyrus ahead of country singer Ella Langley’s “Dandelion,” but the victory came by only about 70 units.
By its second week, “Bass Persuades” had fallen all the way to No. 157, according to Page Six. The 156-position drop is now the largest second-week decline from No. 1 by a female artist in Billboard 200 history.
Madonna previously held the record, with “Madame X” dropping from No. 1 to No. 77 in 2019.
Celine Dion later moved past that mark when “Courage” fell from No. 1 to No. 111 several months afterward.
Cyrus’ Atlantic Era Got An Early Chart Boost
The album’s opening-week performance came after Atlantic Records used an extensive release strategy that included a discounted digital version alongside multiple physical formats.
The label released 16 vinyl variants, nine CD versions, six download variants and a cassette.
Those offerings helped Miley Cyrus narrowly secure the No. 1 position over Langley’s “Dandelion.”
Cyrus had also made a noticeable change to her public presentation before the album arrived, mysteriously removing her last name from her social-media handles.
After the chart result was announced, the singer’s team celebrated at home. Atlantic sent the Grammy Award winner a floral wreath shaped like the number one, marking the album’s debut at the top of the Billboard 200.
Miley Cyrus Celebrated The No. 1 Before The Record-Setting Drop
Cyrus openly embraced the first-week success, describing the achievement as something larger than a conventional chart victory.
On September 29, she took to her Instagram page and shared photos of the floral wreath she received from Atlantic.
She captioned the photos, “Bass Persuades being #1 transcends a win.” Cyrus also credited the people involved in creating and releasing the project.
She wrote, “This process has been some of the best times for me. Everyone involved made it possible and more importantly fun and memorable.”
Cyrus continued by thanking Atlantic, her team and the people supporting her throughout the project. She added, “Thank you Atlantic, my team, and everyone who walks beside me with conviction. I love you.”
Her message also turned directly toward her audience. “To the fans you make my world go round. Making music for you brings immeasurable joy to my life. Forever,” Cyrus concluded.
More From The BlastCyrus Gives ‘Different Religion’ A Striking Visual Treatment
Miley Cyrus’ “Bass Persuades” era continued beyond its Billboard performance with a new visual for “Different Religion,” a track from the album featuring rock band Model/Actriz.
The video arrived September 30 and was directed by Mert Alas, Cyrus’ longtime collaborator.
The visual begins with Cyrus driving along a desert road surrounded by mountains before she meets Charlie Knepper, credited as the “hero.”
She appears behind the wheel before the imagery shifts into darker, stylized scenes featuring her playing an electric guitar.
The song itself centers on the repeated lyrics, “I’ve got my own god / He drives a fast car,” followed by, “My god’s a hot boy.” Model/Actriz’s Cole Haden and Cyrus take turns on additional verses, while other models appear mouthing along to the lyrics.
The chorus features Cyrus singing, “I want to be saved by a different religion / I crave to believe him,” while another section describes her faith in the subject of the song through imagery involving his body and a fast car.
Miley Cyrus Sees Hollywood Bowl Shows As A Residency Test
The visual rollout comes as Miley Cyrus prepares for two rare performances at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 16 and 17.
According to The Blast, ticket demand was enormous, with about 1.5 million people entering the presale queue despite the venue having roughly 18,000 seats.
The demand prompted Cyrus to reconsider what her future live performances could look like.
During an interview with Apple Music’s “Zane Lowe Show,” she described the Hollywood Bowl concerts as “the ultimate dress rehearsal” for a potential residency.
“I’ve learned now through the queue that my calculations are correct, and people will come to me. I don’t need to drive to you,” Cyrus said.
Lowe suggested that the level of demand could warrant an extended run, estimating that she might need 80 Hollywood Bowl shows to accommodate everyone who wanted tickets.
