Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday vowed to continue to back the International Criminal Court and its president, Japanese national Tomoko Akane, after U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday imposed fresh sanctions on the ICC.

“Japan has consistently supported the International Criminal Court and will continue to do so,” Takaichi told lawmakers during questioning in parliament.

The prime minister referred to her administration’s swift response on Friday to the U.S. decision to sanction the court, which she has said is “incompatible” with Japan’s position.
