Quick Read

KSTR fell 43% from late June through late October, wiping out its entire summer rally and leaving it slightly negative for the year.

NVIDIA already represents 7.6% of QQQ, and rising concentration without rising earnings is the same pattern that preceded Shanghai’s crash.

China’s hottest trade of 2026 has become its most painful. The STAR 50, Shanghai’s index of artificial intelligence and chip companies, has fallen 40% from its July high, according to Reuters reporting. Per the same report, the collapse erased about $480 billion in market value over roughly four months.

Superimposed on this are digital stock market numbers in green and red, representing financial data. That figure is a paper decline across the whole index. Actual losses depended on when investors bought. Investors who bought before the summer run-up may still be ahead. Investors who bought in July and August took most of the damage.

Dong Baozhen, a Beijing-based fund manager, gave Reuters a blunt verdict: “The stock market later evolved into a speculative crazy bull. And now we see the bubble bursting.” Beijing appears to have seen trouble coming. Reuters re[prts state-backed investors sold into rallies during the run-up, a sign policymakers wanted to cool the boom.

China’s AI Champions Took the Hardest Hits

The victims read like a list of China’s AI champions, per Trending Topics citing Reuters. Humanoid robot maker Unitree has lost about half its value since its August debut. GPU developers MetaX and Moore Threads, seen as China’s answer to NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), have roughly halved since July. Optical module suppliers Zhongji Innolight and Eoptolink trade about 60% below their summer highs. Memory chip maker CXMT fell more than 25% in the month before Oct. 27.

One Theme Took Over a Whole Market

The damage goes well beyond Shanghai’s tech board. Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) estimates that AI stocks account for 42% of China’s market value and 57% of its trading. When one theme carries that much weight, a reversal hits the whole country’s market.

Story Continues

Valuations help explain how fast the drop came. Trending Topics reported that the STAR 50’s price-to-earnings ratio once stood near 250 and still sits around 100 after the crash, compared with about 30 for the Nasdaq 100, without saying whether those are trailing or forward measures.

American Portfolios Already Took the Hit

Americans felt this directly. The KraneShares China Technology & Semiconductor STAR 50 Index ETF (NYSEARCA:KSTR), the main way U.S. investors hold the index, fell 42.63% from the June 30 close through noon Oct. 28. It lost 21.02% in the past month alone and trades at $18.56. That leaves it 0.27% lower for the year, which means the entire summer rally is gone.

Over the same window, the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ), a stand-in for the Nasdaq 100, slid 1.9% and is down 2.97% over the past month. It remains up 17.6% year to date. Both markets are riding the same AI theme, and the results could hardly be further apart.

Wall Street Expects More Selling Before a Floor

Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) forecasts that offshore Chinese stocks will fall another 10% to 15% before bottoming, according to Yahoo Finance. If that forecast is right, the correction has further to go.

Warning Signs U.S. AI Bulls Should Track

For U.S. investors, China’s selloff works better as a checklist than a forecast. Three warning signs came before the STAR 50’s drop: extreme valuations, heavy concentration in one theme and crowded trading. The U.S. shows softer versions of all three. NVIDIA alone was 7.6% of QQQ’s net assets at the end of June, and chip and AI hardware names fill much of the fund’s top holdings. A Nasdaq 100 multiple near 30 is high, though still far below the STAR 50’s peak.

The signal to track next quarter is whether QQQ’s top holdings take an even bigger share of the fund while hyperscaler spending plans hold steady. Rising concentration without rising earnings is the pattern Shanghai just punished. For KSTR holders, the past four months show how hard a single-country, single-theme fund can swing. A broad index spreads that risk across many sectors, while KSTR concentrates it in one. Riding an AI theme is reasonable as long as the exit plan is written down in advance, which is the entire subject of our free bubble survivor’s handbook.
