James Van Der Beek shared some sweet new photos of himself and his son Jeremiah as the former Dawson’s Creek star continues to battle stage 3 colorectal cancer.

“4 years old today. After 2 late-term losses, we thought we were done. Thank God you knew better,” Van Der Beek, 48, wrote alongside a carousel of pictures he posted via Instagram on October 11. “An iron will combined with an innate sweetness. And ALL boy. And as you run around and scream and bang things… all I can think about is how grateful I am that you came to us.”

Van Der Beek referenced his health struggles in the birthday message to Jeremiah, saying, “I’m sorry there have been spells where I couldn’t be the father I would want to be for you… where I was too weak to pick you up, throw you around, or even put you to bed… but know that watching you reveal yourself to us has been one of the greatest joys of my life.”

Van Der Beek revealed his cancer diagnosis in November 2024, and last month, he canceled his in-person attendance at the Dawson’s Creek reunion for health reasons. While the Varsity Blues star did manage to join virtually with a pre-recorded video, fans couldn’t help but notice he looked markedly different, sparking concern about his health.

A source previously told Star that Van Der Beek was “staying positive and upbeat, and doesn’t want anyone to worry about” him after his absence at the Dawson’s Creek reunion.

“He’s being a rock-solid friend to everyone who knows him, a perfect colleague and husband, and an amazing dad to his kids,” the source added and noted that Van Der Beek was “upset he couldn’t make the reunion in person.”
