In fact, as she and Konner detail below, the room engaged in heated debates about how much to slow the breaks on the relationship at the center of the Netflix hit. Foster, for her part, wanted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-kristen-bell-adam-brody-cast-secrets\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-kristen-bell-adam-brody-cast-secrets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">two leads<\/a>, Joanne (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/kristen-bell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kristen-bell_1\" data-tag=\"kristen-bell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kristen Bell<\/a>) and Noah (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/adam-brody\/\" id=\"auto-tag_adam-brody_1\" data-tag=\"adam-brody\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adam Brody<\/a>), to end the season engaged, but \u2014 spoiler alert! \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-justine-lupe-interview-1236408961\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-justine-lupe-interview-1236408961\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">that doesn\u2019t happen either<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIf season one was, \u2018Will they, won\u2019t they,&#8217;\u201d says Foster, \u201cseason two is, \u2018How will they?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe and Konner sat down as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-kristen-bell-adam-brody-interview-1236405443\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-kristen-bell-adam-brody-interview-1236405443\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">THR\u2019s cover shoot<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-kristen-bell-adam-brody-interview-1236405443\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>to discuss the battles in the writers room, as well as the scene that required a post-wrap revamp and plot points that almost took a very different form.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t***<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tErin, I\u2019ve heard you say that it was important to you that you give the audience what they want. What does that mean, exactly?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tERIN FOSTER I just think this is not the show for trickery, and I\u2019m not trying to give people an unhappy ending. It\u2019s not intended to be, \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen? Will this all fall apart?\u201d I definitely never set out to write a rom-com, but once it was absorbed for people as a rom-com, I [recognized] that the romance and love and togetherness is a really big part of what people enjoy, so I\u2019m not going to make an artistic choice to, like, kill anybody off or find out Noah\u2019s cheating on Joanne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJENNI KONNER Yet!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Jenni wants to kill everyone off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER I do. I want Erin to star in the show, so we have to slowly kill people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Bye, Kristen\u2026 (Laughter.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhat was the biggest debate in the writers room?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Oh, I know what it was.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER What?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-justine-lupe-interview-1236408961\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-justine-lupe-interview-1236408961\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Morgan [Justine Lupe] and Sasha [Timothy Simons]<\/a>?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER Oh, I was going to say\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Them [Joanne and Noah] getting engaged or not?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER Yeah.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER There was a battle about, \u201cDo they get engaged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER A long battle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER We survived it. But we weren\u2019t on the same side of it. We were against each other and one of us won\u2026. and it was Jenni. [Editor\u2019s note: Joanne and Noah are not engaged by the end of season two.] But we got through it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER And are you excited now?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER I\u2019m very happy. I would\u2019ve been happy either way, but I\u2019m very happy,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER Disagree. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER The other battle was what to do with Sasha and Morgan\u2019s will they, won\u2019t they? Is there a romance? What is it? Is it a flirtation? How far does it go? Does it go anywhere? Does it go nowhere? That was something we really stressed about season one and then also season two, trying to figure out how to clean it up properly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER But we also wanted to really keep it grounded and real, so it wasn\u2019t a thing that just disappeared completely. Which is why right at the beginning [of season two], <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-jackie-tohn-esther-interview-1236410195\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-jackie-tohn-esther-interview-1236410195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Esther [Jackie Tohn] <\/a>drags them into the bedroom and is like, \u201cWhat\u2019s happening? And we\u2019re putting a stop to it,\u201d which felt very Esther to us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Also, in real life, if you find out your husband has had a flirtation of some kind, that means they were open to it in some way and that\u2019s a vulnerability in your relationship. So we love this idea that it sort of woke Esther up. If you\u2019re a wife who doesn\u2019t necessarily appreciate the husband you have, who\u2019s obsessed with you, and you see that somebody else might want him, it wakes you up and makes you think, \u201cI need to maybe be the best version of myself because my man\u2019s got options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDid I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-kristen-bell-adam-brody-interview-1236405443\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-kristen-bell-adam-brody-interview-1236405443\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">hear<\/a> you had written a version where Sasha and Morgan do, actually, get together?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER In season one, it was going to go further. And then while we were in the process, it just didn\u2019t feel like it was tracking for us. Sometimes you have an idea in your mind and then once you start writing the scripts and you see everything together with the actors, it starts to feel like we\u2019re not ready for that. The end of a rom-com is when the lights [typically] go out and you never come back. You make up in your head, \u201cWell, and then they got married and then they did this, and then they did that.\u201d So, to start from there is hard. It\u2019s hard to figure out what a finale is and how to make a happy ending that feels different enough from a really happy ending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Also, season two is a lot of putting on the brakes and still making it fun, which was hard to pull off. How do you slow the process down? Because they\u2019re not getting engaged and\u00a0she\u2019s not converting. So what are they doing that\u2019s fun? What do you want to watch? You have to zoom in really closely to a relationship and think about, what are the things that are happening in those months? And there actually is a lot that can happen, but we weren\u2019t able to pull the big things.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIs there anything you still can\u2019t believe you got away with?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER Getting to do this show \u2014 or having so much fun getting to do this show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Yeah. But what\u2019s the spicy answer?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER Ordering lunch from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/lifestyle-news\/erewhon-dynasty-antoci-family-interview-1235613048\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/lifestyle-news\/erewhon-dynasty-antoci-family-interview-1235613048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Erewhon<\/a> when it\u2019s out of our budget. That\u2019s the relatable answer. (Laughs.) Okay, \u200b\u200bwhat about Sasha\u2019s dance sequence? It was really complicated because we didn\u2019t want it to be too jokey and it just turned out that Tim\u2019s got moves. I feel like we got away with that in a way we didn\u2019t anticipate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER It was inspired by my husband doing a surprise dance for me at our wedding. It was to \u201c7 Rings\u201d by Ariana Grande and he got his college friends to be on it too. [To Konner] I don\u2019t think you\u2019ve ever seen it, and I don\u2019t think you ever should because you like Simon [Tikhman] so much, I don\u2019t want to ruin it for you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER I\u2019ll get the ick. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Yeah, but it was really funny. Also, I\u2019d say that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-jackie-tohn-esther-interview-1236410195\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/nobody-wants-this-season-2-ending-jackie-tohn-esther-interview-1236410195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">scene<\/a> where Esther tells Joanne \u2014 spoiler alert \u2014 \u201cYou\u2019re Jewish,\u201d we shot a month after we wrapped. I had already gone to the Bahamas, I was like, \u201cGuys, I\u2019m done. We did this.\u201d I went to the Bahamas [with my family]\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER See ya, suckers!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Literally, I was like, I\u2019m on a boat with my family with my phone turned off. Then all of a sudden I\u2019m getting calls, \u201cYou have to rewrite that scene.\u201d It was such an important moment and it wasn\u2019t right. We wanted to get it perfect, so we shot it at a completely different location a month later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER And Erin and I directed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER We did, because Jenni\u2019s husband, Richard [Shepard] was the director of that episode, but then he was busy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER It turned into a much more emotional scene and it tracked where [Esther and Joanne] both were. We always had the idea that Esther would be the one to pivot Joanne, but we didn\u2019t have such a sweet version.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER We really loved this idea that my sister-in-law, in real life, and I started out kind of as adversaries and then when we got married, she was like, \u201cYou\u2019re my sister now.\u201d It was this really great full-circle moment, so we really loved this idea that Esther becomes this person who brings Joanne into the fold and welcomes her and says, \u201cYou really are one of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHow was it initially written and shot?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER Someone was always going to tell her, \u201cYou\u2019ve always been Jewish\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER But we experimented with a lot of people who it could have been. And the one we shot was a version of that scene [with Esther]. Was that a debate in the writers room?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER It was definitely a debate because it\u2019s a huge thing that we wanted to be really thoughtful about, but we were aiming at it for a long time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER It felt like she was making herself so clear all season. We love this idea that Esther doesn\u2019t want to be Esther at Purim, it was so symbolic. We also all have friends who\u2019ve been married a long time, who get that itch, and you kind of have to figure it out on your own a lot of times. We also love the idea of Sasha showing up as this really good guy and being like, \u201cI\u2019ll get out of your way so that you can figure that out.\u201d So it was always the goal [to have them separate], but there were some people [in the room who] weren\u2019t on board and wanted us to soften it a bit, and make it vague and not final. Personally, I don\u2019t love when I\u2019m watching a TV show and nothing happens. I needed something definitive to happen, and who knows if they\u2019ll stay apart or be back together?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLet\u2019s stay on the finale: What were the conversations and debates like with regard to Noah and Joanne\u2019s arc, which mirrors the season one finale?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKONNER We were going for a flip of the [season one] ending, which was much more Joanne driven. We always knew we were heading towards her figuring out that she was Jewish and that she felt something. There are these little steps along the way where she\u2019s like, \u201cI moved an inch. I\u2019m starting to see it.\u201d But like Esther says, she\u2019s waiting for this huge thing to happen that will do it, but it wound up being all those little things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFOSTER We were like, \u201cWait, this is so similar to the ending of season one, are we just repeating ourselves?\u201d But then we thought, \u201cWait a second, no, it\u2019s going to be the reverse: She\u2019s going to run to him, she\u2019s going to be trying to find him.\u201d This show is meant to be very grounded, and sometimes you have this idea in your mind of a spiritual awakening, like God\u2019s hand reaching through the clouds, and that is a lot to live up to. So we love this idea that it feels unexpected or different than you think it will. In the same way that falling in love can feel different, becoming a parent can feel different, loss can feel different. Sometimes things feel smaller than you think or bigger than you think, and we really liked the idea this would be a surprising, unexpected, I\u2019ve-already-been-here kind of energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t***<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNobody Wants This is now streaming season two on Netflix.
