\n\tEthan Hawke<\/a> recently joined Vanity Fair<\/a> for a career retrospective video interview and remained in awe that he got the chance to watch Robin Williams<\/a> act on the set of 1989\u2019s \u201cDead Poets Society<\/a>.\u201d Hawke was 18 years old at the time and observed that directing Williams was \u201cnot an easy thing to do\u201d for filmmaker Peter Weir. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cRobin is a comic genius. But dramatic acting was still new to Robin at that time,\u201d Hawke said. \u201cAnd watching that relationship like, in the room \u2014 I was four feet away while they\u2019re talking about performance \u2014 and that was something you don\u2019t un-see. Robin Williams didn\u2019t do the script, and I didn\u2019t know you could do that. If he had an idea, he just did it. He didn\u2019t ask permission. And that was a new door that was opened to my brain, that you could play like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeter liked it, as long as we still achieved the same goals that the script had,\u201d Hawke continued, noting the two men \u201chad a very different way of working, but they didn\u2019t judge one another or resist one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey worked with each other. That\u2019s exciting \u2014 that\u2019s when you get at the stuff of what great collaboration can do,\u201d Hawke explained. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be the same \u2014 you don\u2019t have to hate somebody for being different than you are. And then the collective imagination can become very, very powerful, because the movie becomes bigger that one person\u2019s point of view. it\u2019s containing multiple perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDead Poets Society\u201d stars Williams as an English teacher at an elite boarding school in 1959 who inspires his unruly students through the teaching of poetry. The movie was a box office success with $235 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 1989, and it became an awards darling with Oscar nominations for best picture, actor for Williams and director.<\/p>\n
