(Thales )<\/p>\n<p>Thales has been contracted by the French Defence Procurement Agency (Direction G\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l&#8217;Armement: DGA) to deliver a new ground-based low Earth orbit (LEO) space surveillance radar called Aurore, according to the company&#8217;s press release on 28 October.<\/p>\n<p>\n      The contract to develop, deliver, and deploy the radar system is within France&#8217;s Space Action and Resilience (ARES) programme, which was established under the 2024\u201330 Military Programming Law (LPM). According to previous<br \/>\n      Janes<br \/>\n       reporting, ARES programme&#8217;s key objectives include cataloguing 50,000\u201360,000 space objects to bolster space surveillance, identify malicious actions using artificial intelligence (AI), and developing capabilities to counter attacks in space. As part of this effort, France is investing in ground-based and orbiting space surveillance systems.\n    <\/p>\n<p>The software-defined Aurore radar operates in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. The ground-based system will provide continuous surveillance and tracking of multiple space objects, as per the release. Aurore is expected to be the largest surveillance radar deployed in Europe, according to Thales. The radar will be manufactured at Thales&#8217; Limours site.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement comes days after France and Germany signed a letter of intent (LOI) on 15 October to formalise co-operation between the two countries as part of the Joint Early Warning for European Lookout (JEWEL) initiative. The project&#8217;s main aim is to develop a European early warning system, which will contribute to NATO&#8217;s Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD).
