{"id":105796,"date":"2025-10-30T10:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T10:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/105796\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T10:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T10:18:11","slug":"what-made-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/105796\/","title":{"rendered":"What made the moon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/what-made-the-moon.jpg\" alt=\"What made the moon?\" title=\"Credit: NASA\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Credit: NASA<\/p>\n<p>Our moon\u2014or la Luna\u2014has inspired humankind for millennia.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualreviews.org\/content\/journals\/10.1146\/annurev-earth-031621-055545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largely agreed<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/moon\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">moon<\/a> was created around 4.5 billion years ago when a protoplanet collided with early molten Earth, smashing off a chunk large enough to form the moon.<\/p>\n<p>This Mars-sized protoplanet is often called Theia.<\/p>\n<p>The unique collision with Theia set in motion a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/butterfly+effect\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">butterfly effect<\/a>, impacting almost every facet of Earth&#8217;s history and modern life.<\/p>\n<p>Without the moon, we&#8217;d have no tides, and it&#8217;s possible our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-the-moon-shaped-human-history-from-religion-to-climate\/#:~:text=Its%20cycles%20of%20departure%20and,that%20allowed%20societies%20to%20coagulate.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">aquatic ancestors<\/a> would never have made it to dry land.<\/p>\n<p>Our solid, rocky moon is rare.<\/p>\n<p>Of the three planets closest to the sun, we&#8217;re the only one with a moon.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also massive, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/moon\/five-things-to-know-about-the-moon\/#:~:text=This%20one&#039;s%20another%20easy%20approximation,as%20the%20U.S.%20or%20Europe.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diameter<\/a> about a quarter of Earth&#8217;s\u2014another rarity in our solar system.<\/p>\n<p>Most moons <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11214-025-01156-8#Sec8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">start as disks<\/a>, like Saturn&#8217;s rings. These gradually merge into larger and larger globs, eventually forming one big orb. Either that, or moons start as asteroids and are captured by gravity as they zoom by.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThey did the math<\/p>\n<p>Once considered controversial, mathematical modeling supports the giant-impact theory.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/astro.dur.ac.uk\/~cklv53\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr. Jacob Kegerreis<\/a> is an astrophysicist at Imperial College London. He uses <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/supercomputer+simulations\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">supercomputer simulations<\/a> to study giant impacts.<\/p>\n<p>These simulations model the early solar system. Through repetition and trial and error, they explore what could have occurred eons ago.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob describes our ancient solar system as a &#8220;huge cloud of gas and ice and dust&#8221; around the sun that was slowly collapsing and clumping together under its own gravity.<\/p>\n<p>Early on, planets like Jupiter grew giant, and the increased gravity pulled in matter around it.<\/p>\n<p>Terrestrial planets like Earth and Venus formed differently.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those are made up of tens of smaller protoplanets,&#8221; says Jacob. &#8220;Small, rocky bodies that were forming themselves and then collided together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/what-made-the-moon-1.jpg\" alt=\"What made the moon?\" title=\"Astronomers have long thought our Solar System started as a dense, gradually collapsing cloud of gas. Credit: ALMA CC BY 4.0\/Wikimedia Commons<\/p>\n<p>From little things, big things grow<\/p>\n<p>Previously, it was suggested the moon was an <a href=\"https:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/full\/1986ormo.conf..471S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asteroid<\/a> captured by Earth&#8217;s orbit or was a part of Earth that split off due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF01877794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">force of our rotation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob says these theories are unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is very hard to come up with a good way to get that much mass, that much material, that much energy and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/angular+momentum\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">angular momentum<\/a> out into orbit to make something like the moon without a giant impact,&#8221; says Jacob.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that Earth and the moon are so similar makes it appealing to say that&#8217;s because they came from the same stuff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that they are so similar is also a real challenge \u2026 because with many simulations that we run of giant impacts, you don&#8217;t get an equal mix of the impactor and the proto-Earth that collide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t yet have a complete explanation of why the signatures are so identical now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-3\">\n        Discover the latest in science, tech, and space with over 100,000 subscribers who rely on Phys.org for daily insights.<br \/>\n        Sign up for our <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencex.com\/help\/newsletter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">free newsletter<\/a> and get updates on breakthroughs,<br \/>\n        innovations, and research that matter\u2014daily or weekly.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLunar lengths<\/p>\n<p>The moon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astronomy.com\/science\/our-moon-has-been-slowly-drifting-away-from-earth-over-the-past-2-5-billion-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drifts a tiny bit further from<\/a> Earth each year. This can support the giant-impact hypothesis, as researchers can chart the historical course of the moon and cross-reference that with modeling data.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How the moon&#8217;s orbit has evolved and how long it would have taken for the moon to move away from Earth helps to constrain how fast Earth would have been spinning after the impact,&#8221; says Jacob.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the reasons scientists can learn so much from studying the moon is how comparatively pristine the moon is as a celestial body that formed in the early solar system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Earth, which is a constantly churning mass of weather and plate tectonics.<\/p>\n<p>A huge puzzle<\/p>\n<p>Jacob&#8217;s simulations use a technique called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/materials-science\/smooth-particle-hydrodynamics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">smooth particle hydrodynamics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All you are doing is describing the system and modeling the system with millions or even billions of particles that are representing this material,&#8221; says Jacob.<\/p>\n<p>Second by second, the computer calculates how each little particle moves and interacts with gravity and pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We design codes to use these impressive supercomputing machines to try to do this as efficiently and rapidly as possible,&#8221; says Jacob.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s solving these pretty standard equations that we can individually test to then predict what happens in an extremely complicated entire system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Without a time machine, it&#8217;s extremely difficult to determine precisely what happened 3.5 billion years ago.<\/p>\n<p>That said, dated lunar rock samples collected on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualreviews.org\/content\/journals\/10.1146\/annurev-earth-031621-060538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Apollo missions<\/a> also support the theory that Earth and the moon were once one.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the giant impact with Theia is a massive undertaking.
