Twenty-eight\u00a0writers from across Canada have been longlisted for the 2025\u00a0CBC Nonfiction Prize<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The longlist was selected from more than 1,300 submissions. Submissions are processed by a two-tiered system: the\u00a0initial texts are screened by a reading committee chosen for each category from\u00a0a group of qualified editors and writers<\/a>\u00a0across the country. Each text is read by two readers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The readers\u00a0come up with a preliminary list of approximately 100 texts that are then forwarded to a second reading committee. It is this\u00a0committee\u00a0who\u00a0will decide upon the approximately 30 entries that comprise the longlist that is forwarded to the jury.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Works are judged anonymously on the basis of the participant’s use of language, originality of subject and writing style.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The jury selects the shortlist and the eventual winner from the readers’ longlisted selections. This year’s jury is composed of\u00a0Zoe Whittall, Danny Ramadan and Helen Knott<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The shortlist will be announced on Sept. 18\u00a0and the winner will be announced on Sept. 25.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The winner of the 2025\u00a0CBC Nonfiction Prize<\/a>\u00a0will receive $6,000 from the\u00a0Canada Council for the Arts<\/a>, a two-week writing residency at\u00a0Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity<\/a>\u00a0and their work will be published on\u00a0CBC Books<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Four finalists will each receive $1,000 from the\u00a0Canada Council for the Arts<\/a>\u00a0and have their work published on\u00a0CBC Books<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last year’s winner was writer\u00a0Aldona Dziedziejko<\/a>\u00a0for her essay\u00a0Ice Safety Chart: Fragments<\/a>.\u00a0You can read the entire\u00a02024\u00a0shortlist here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0CBC Literary Prizes<\/a>\u00a0have been recognizing Canadian writers since 1979. Past winners include\u00a0David Bergen<\/a>,\u00a0Michael Ondaatje<\/a>,\u00a0Carol Shields<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Winter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
