His recent decision to sign a two-year, $25 million extension has sparked conversations across the league about player value, loyalty, and the pursuit of championships.<\/p>\n

Connor McDavid questions the \u201cunfortunate part of the system\u201d<\/p>\n

In a revealing conversation with The Athletic\u2019s Daniel Nugent-Bowman, McDavid shared his frustration with the NHL\u2019s financial setup, saying it forces players to pick between money and success. \u201cIt\u2019s the unfortunate part of the system,\u201d McDavid said. \u201cIt sucks that way. I\u2019d love for hockey players to go and make $20 million or $25 million, but that\u2019s just not the way it works. We play hockey, and that\u2019s the system that we\u2019re in.\u201dMcDavid could have secured a long-term deal worth up to 20 percent of the salary cap, but he chose otherwise. His $12.5 million annual salary remains unchanged from his previous contract, effectively giving Edmonton a discount. \u201cIt\u2019s not a hard calculation to figure out,\u201d McDavid said. \u201cTake too much, and the team is going to have difficulty augmenting the roster.\u201dHis choice reflects a selfless commitment to the Oilers\u2019 bigger picture. By taking less, McDavid created financial breathing room for the front office to strengthen the lineup. The team quickly used the saved cap space to extend defenseman Jake Walman, a move made possible largely because of McDavid\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

McDavid\u2019s sacrifice highlights his championship mindset<\/p>\n

McDavid, 28, remains focused on one goal \u2014 bringing the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton. The Oilers have reached the final two years in a row but fell short each time, losing to the Florida Panthers. His mindset is clear: success over salary. \u201cEverybody who makes money in this league earns that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s different situations, different teams, different constructs.\u201dAdjusted for inflation, McDavid\u2019s current deal is actually a pay cut compared to his 2017 contract, which accounted for 15.7 percent of the salary cap.
