Discover what\u2019s next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsdvga006227qeboh442e5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An interstellar comet that originated outside our solar system just made its closest pass of the sun, setting it on an outgoing path \u2014 but it\u2019s not leaving our cosmic neighborhood yet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000f356nod6jhkl2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The comet, dubbed 3I\/ATLAS, came within about 126 million miles (203 million kilometers) of our star, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/space\/new-interstellar-object-candidate-heading-toward-the-sun-a11pl3z\/?mc_cid=87d2d60d70&amp;mc_eid=be2a1ee2ac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EarthSky<\/a>. The object is currently behind the sun from the perspective of ground-based telescopes on Earth, but astronomers anticipate being able to view the comet again in a few weeks, said Darryl Seligman, assistant professor in the department of physics and astronomy at Michigan State University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000g356n6m0nnsd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stargazers using telescopes should be able to see the object in the predawn sky beginning November 11, according to EarthSky.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/exomars-trace-gas-orbiter-observes-comet-3i-atlas-static.jpg\" alt=\"The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter captured an image of 3I\/ATLAS on October 3.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"583\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000h356nxmpht6dn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronomers will have a few more months to observe the comet before it begins heading out of our solar system, Seligman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000i356nikqbw14a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The comet will make its closest approach of Earth on December 19, coming within about 168 million miles (270 million kilometers) \u2014 but it poses no threat to our planet, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Comet_3I_ATLAS_frequently_asked_questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Space Agency<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000j356ntwhwe6iw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronomers have been observing the comet, only the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system, since its discovery on July 1.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000k356n6sb6etj4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Each observation is shedding light on this interstellar object and how different it may be from comets that originated in our solar system.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/stsci-01k1x6xdr76zd4fyj9vtwn1erb.jpg\" alt=\"Hubble captured this image of the interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS on July 21.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1179\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000l356nhnj8vfqt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Comets are like dirty snowballs left over from the formation of solar systems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000m356njdxwd2ks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A comet\u2019s nucleus is its solid core, made of ice, dust and rocks. When comets travel near stars such as the sun, heat causes them to release gas and dust, which creates their signature tails.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000n356npfj9bw5f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronomers are interested in capturing as many observations of the comet as they can because as it nears the sun, material releasing from the object could reveal more about its composition \u2014 and the star system where it originated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000o356nr17wr9ji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen it gets closest to the sun, you get the most holistic view of the nucleus possible,\u201d Seligman said. \u201cOne of the main things driving most cometary scientists is, what is the composition of the volatiles? It shows you the initial primordial material that it formed from.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000p356nrapoj1mc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists have used powerful tools, such as the Hubble Space and James Webb Space telescopes, along with a multitude of space-based missions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/11\/science\/nasa-spherex-punch-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SPHEREx<\/a>, to study the comet.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/spherex-image-2-co2.jpg\" alt=\"NASA\u2019s SPHEREx observed 3I\/ATLAS between August 7 and 15.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1604\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000q356nyyuxgau4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The SPHEREx and Webb observations detected carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/10039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">carbonyl sulphide<\/a> and water ice releasing from the comet as it neared the sun, according to the ESA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000r356njywpl0wr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Preliminary estimates indicate that the interstellar comet is 3 billion to 11 billion years old, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2507.08111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> coauthored by Seligman and Aster Taylor, a doctoral student and Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellow at the University of Michigan, in August. For reference, our solar system is estimated to be about 4.6 billion years old.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000s356nwywux2hu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Carbon dioxide turns directly from a solid into a gas in response to temperature changes much more easily than most elements \u2014 which means the comet has likely never been close to another star before its brush with the sun, Seligman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/webb-image-1-ifu-ir.jpg\" alt=\"The James Webb Space Telescope observed the interstellar comet on August 6 with its Near-Infrared Spectrograph.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1649\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000t356njg8p00tf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The interstellar comet faded from the view of ground-based telescopes in October, but it remained in sight for missions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/punch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PUNCH<\/a>, or Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere, and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/soho\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SOHO<\/a>, or the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The object also made its closest approach of Mars on October 3, coming within 18.6 million miles (30 million kilometers) of the red planet \u2014 and the spacecraft orbiting it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000u356negnmwxuk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the government shutdown has prevented data sharing from any NASA missions that have observed the comet since October 1, the ESA\u2019s Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter attempted to capture views of 3I\/ATLAS in October.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000v356norhei6mf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The cameras aboard those missions are designed to study the relatively close, bright surface of Mars, but ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter managed to observe the comet as a fuzzy white dot.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000w356nodn8wyaa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis was a very challenging observation for the instrument,\u201d Nick Thomas, principal investigator of the orbiter\u2019s camera, said in a statement, noting the comet is around 10,000 to 100,000 times \u201cfainter than our usual target.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhdsjsiv000x356nf5wh2bda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            ESA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Juice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer<\/a>, or Juice, will also attempt to observe 3I\/ATLAS in November using multiple instruments despite the comet being farther from the spacecraft than it was when observed by the Mars orbiters.
