The first season of True Detective isn\u2019t just great TV, it\u2019s one of the best damn things ever put on the small screen. The grim, hypnotic story of Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) was unforgettable, a lightning-in-a-bottle moment that the later seasons never quite captured. Earlier this year, True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto teased that he had an idea<\/a> to bring the duo back for another mystery\u2026 but according to Woody Harrelson, that\u2019s not going to happen.<\/p>\n

While appearing on Today<\/a>, host Dylan Dreyer stated that McConaughey had said he and Harrelson would consider another season<\/a> if it was good enough. \u201cMatthew\u2019s so funny,\u201d Harrelson responded. \u201cBut in fairness, never. Not a chance.\u201c<\/p>\n

Harrelson explained his reasons for not wanting to return aren\u2019t because he didn\u2019t love working on the show, but all to do with the risk of ruining it. \u201cBecause it turned out great,\u201d he said. \u201cI love that it turned out the way it did. If anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.\u201c<\/p>\n

I would agree. As great as it might be to see Cohle and Hart reunite for more True Detective, it would be quite the feat to even come close to that first season.<\/p>\n

When Pizzolatto spoke of having an idea for a reunion, he implied that McConaughey and Harrelson were into it. \u201cI actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that \u2014 who knows? \u2014 maybe we\u2019ll do it one day,\u201d Pizzolatto said. \u201cIt\u2019s character-based again. \u2026 But it\u2019s not something I\u2019ve written or anything. It\u2019s just, I had that in my head. And we\u2019ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It\u2019s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.\u201c<\/p>\n

Although Pizzolatto was behind the first three seasons of True Detective, his HBO contract expired, and the network turned to Issa L\u00f3pez to develop a new season. True Detective: Night Country was a success, and HBO quickly signed L\u00f3pez for another season. HBO\u2019s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi, said the new season<\/a> will be \u201cset in New York, in Jamaica Bay. Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It\u2019s a different milieu but just as powerful.\u201d Production is expected to kick off later this year, but the show isn\u2019t scheduled to premiere until 2027.
