{"id":109095,"date":"2025-11-01T04:08:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/109095\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T04:08:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:08:13","slug":"canceled-samia-halaby-exhibition-partially-recreated-in-qatar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/109095\/","title":{"rendered":"Canceled Samia Halaby Exhibition Partially Recreated in Qatar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Mathaf: Arab\u00a0Museum\u00a0of Modern Art in Qatar is showing works by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/samia-halaby\/\" id=\"auto-tag_samia-halaby\" data-tag=\"samia-halaby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samia Halaby<\/a> that were meant to appear in a canceled survey to be held last year at Indiana University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn December 2023, the school\u2019s Eskenazi Museum of Art <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/indiana-university-cancels-survey-palestinian-painter-samia-halaby-1234692712\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called off the Palestinian artist\u2019s show<\/a>, citing \u201csafety reasons.\u201d The show was scrapped just a month before it was to open at the university\u2019s Eskenazi Museum of Art; Halaby, 87 at the time of the cancellation, had earned a master\u2019s degree at the university and later taught there. Halaby noted at the time that the cancelation came \u201cat a time when Palestinian civilians are being massacred, starved, and displaced by the millions in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-artnews-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/GettyImages-950084102.jpg\" alt=\"A woman standing beside an abstract painting showing many superimposed colorful squares.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2024, Michigan State University\u2019s museum ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-in-america\/aia-reviews\/samia-halaby-palestinian-painter-retrospective-msu-indiana-cancelled-1234711674\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">staging a part of the exhibition<\/a> of her work. Halaby also won a special mention for her participation at the Venice Biennale that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMathaf is now staging a presentation of Halaby\u2019s paintings that includes seven of the 35 works that were to appear in the Indiana show. Halaby\u2019s work appears in the first gallery of the just-opened exhibition\u00a0 \u201cwe refuse_d,\u201d curated by Vasif Kortun. The gallery also includes one work that appeared in the Michigan exhibition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe nine Halaby works in the Mathaf show, all abstract paintings, span 1980 to 2024. They include the 1989 painting Worldwide Intifadah, which the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/11\/arts\/design\/indiana-university-samia-halaby-exhibition-canceled.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> reported was \u201cpreviously unseen\u201d before the planned Indiana show. Also at Mathaf is the 2024 painting Massacre of the Innocents in Gaza. The largest work is the sprawling Transitions (1988\u201398), which spans an entire wall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOne artwork that would not have been in the Indiana show is the 1999 painting The Red One, which is in the collection of Mathaf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKortun said the gallery intentionally used lighting and wall color to mimic the way the show would have appeared in Indiana\u2019s Eskenazi Museum. \u201cIt pretends to be what would have been her exhibition there,\u201d he said.\u201d Halaby, who is based in New York, attended the opening of the Mathaf show on Thursday night after participating in a panel discussion \u201cForms of Resistance: Palestinian art Today\u201d alongside fellow Palestinian artists Taysir Batniji and Dima Srouji at the nearby Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts Qatar . On the panel, Halaby related her abstract paintings to nature and craft, and drew a distinction between them and her political activity. \u201cSome people ask me \u2018Where is Palestine in your work?\u2019\u2026I don\u2019t want to make a painting that has good politics so that the gallery will approve it and people will look at it. That\u2019s not politics to me. I make very blunt posters\u201d about the political situation in Palestine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cwe refuse_d\u201d includes works by other artists who had cancelations over the past two years, including Jumana Manna, a Palestinian filmmaker and sculptor whose show at the Heidelberger Kunstverein in Germany was canceled in October 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHalaby\u2019s art has recently seen a surge interest, both within museums and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/market\/palestinian-artist-samia-halabys-market-rise-to-continue-this-fall-1234749012\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the market<\/a>.
