And while I was dreaming of workarounds, it turns out Microsoft and Meta were busy delivering the real thing.

Microsoft has just announced that its “Mixed Reality Link” and the “Windows App for Meta Quest” are now generally available for all Quest 3 and Quest 3S users. This isn’t a beta or a preview; it’s a full-fledged, first-party feature. And it does exactly what I’ve been wanting.

The seamless multi-monitor dream

With the latest Horizon OS update and the new Mixed Reality Link Windows app, users can seamlessly connect their Meta Quest headset to their Windows 11 PC (or a Windows 365 Cloud PC) and instantly create a workspace with multiple, high-resolution virtual monitors. You can even opt for one massive, curved ultrawide display that wraps around your field of view.

The best part? The simplicity. You just install “Mixed Reality Link” on your PC, put on your headset, look at your keyboard, and tap “Pair.” That’s it. No janky cables, no third-party app-hopping. It’s the simple, seamless productivity dream I’ve been talking about, allowing you to have a full-scale workstation on a plane, in a coffee shop, or anywhere you want to get work done in XR.

Featured Videos

And this is where I get so excited, and frankly, a bit jealous. Samsung and Google just officially launched the $1800 Galaxy XR and the entire Android XR platform. But the only productivity solution we saw was “PC Link,” a feature that only works with Samsung’s own Galaxy Book laptops. Microsoft and Meta, on the other hand, just delivered a platform-level solution that works for the entire Windows 11 ecosystem.

I think this update from Microsoft and Meta sets the standard for what a productivity headset should do. As Google continues to build out Android XR and push forward with the Android and ChromeOS merger, this level of seamless, wireless, virtual-desktop integration isn’t just a “nice-to-have” feature – I think it’s an absolute must-have. The ball is in your court, Google.

Join Chrome Unboxed Plus

Introducing Chrome Unboxed Plus – our revamped membership community.
