Dyan Cannon has tried it all \u2014 but it was her deep faith in God that gave her lasting peace in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

The actress is the co-host of a new podcast, “God\u2019s Table Hollywood,”<\/a> which features faith-based conversations about finding purpose. The 88-year-old told Fox News Digital that, looking back, she struggled to find meaning in her life before becoming a proud “God girl.”<\/p>\n

“My main seeking has been to understand why I\u2019m here, to understand who I really am,” she said. “Not to fit in necessarily, and not to stand out necessarily. But to understand. And in understanding, there\u2019s been freedom for me, and that\u2019s what we try and talk about on the podcast.”<\/p>\n

“Is it always easy? No. Life isn\u2019t easy,” she reflected. “So how do we deal with that? How do we get through that? Well, I\u2019ve tried everything. I\u2019ve tried drugs. I\u2019ve tried men. I\u2019ve tried pills. I\u2019ve tried everything. But they were like a Band-Aid that didn\u2019t stick when I started to sweat. So, I had to find a platform, a faith, or a sounding board, something to stand on and base my thinking on. One that doesn\u2019t change.”<\/p>\n

“Faith has helped me<\/a> with my emotional life,” she continued. “I used to expect a man to make me happy. Can you believe that? I used to think that was his job, to make me happy. That\u2019s\u2026 impossible. A lot of things have radically changed in my life because of the way I\u2019ve learned to rethink it.”<\/p>\n

The Oscar nominee<\/a> was married twice, the first time to Cary Grant. They had an age gap of more than 30 years \u2014 he was 62, and she was 28 when they said “I do” in 1965. They welcomed a daughter, Jennifer Grant, in 1966, the late actor\u2019s only child. The marriage became stormy and ended in 1968.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After the couple’s split, Grant married his fifth wife in 1981 \u2014 a union that lasted until his death in 1986.<\/p>\n

Cannon\u2019s second marriage to producer Stanley Fimberg lasted from 1985 to 1991.<\/p>\n

“When I say I\u2019m a \u2018God girl,\u2019 it means that through all the years of seeking and through all the years of trying, it has led me to understand there\u2019s just one God who loves everybody the same,” she explained. “I actually did a thing called \u2018God\u2019s Party\u2019 on the CBS lot for 13 years just out of love and out of gratitude for all the good in my life and that continues to be in my life.”<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s just one word to me that represents God and that is Love,” she said. “That\u2019s capital L. Not little l that comes and goes, but capital Love that remains the same.”<\/p>\n

Still, it hasn\u2019t been easy for Cannon to be outspoken about her faith.<\/p>\n

“In the past, I lost friends because of it,” she admitted. “So-called friends. They weren\u2019t really friends. And maybe even some work because of it. But I think the city of angels \u2014 Los Angeles<\/a> \u2014 better decide whose angels they are.”<\/p>\n

“We have an episode about how we met God,” she said. “Mine starts with how I met him on the Universal lot. I was about 22 and his name was Cary Grant, because that was God to me at the time. I was trying to find my way in the world.”<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t think wisdom necessarily comes with age,” she said. “I don\u2019t think you have to grow old to understand life. I think wisdom comes with seeking. And I was seeking truth.”<\/p>\n

Before they married, Grant persuaded Cannon to try LSD, the Los Angeles Times<\/a> reported in 2011. When their marriage began to break down, Cannon took the psychedelic drug with him several times. According to numerous books and documentaries about Grant, the actor credited LSD for helping him address his childhood traumas.<\/p>\n

“He thought it was a gateway to God,” she told the outlet. “He thought it was going to help him find peace.”<\/p>\n

“I knew I shouldn\u2019t do it, but I did it to please him and to save our marriage,” she told the outlet at the time about using the drug. “But I kept saying, \u2018How is this going to help me find God? How is this going to help you find God?\u2019 He didn\u2019t force me to take it. I said, \u2018Yes.\u2019”<\/p>\n

The outlet noted that after their divorce<\/a>, Cannon attempted to ease her pain with pills and marijuana. She suffered a breakdown and ended up, as she said, “in the nut house.”<\/p>\n

“I was locked up,” she told the outlet. “Most of my best friends didn\u2019t know about it.”<\/p>\n

Faith has always been part of Cannon\u2019s life. Her mother was Jewish and her father Christian. Over the years, her relationship with God has been an anchor during life\u2019s ups and downs, she noted.<\/p>\n

“Faith isn\u2019t always easy to practice,” she told Fox News Digital. “But it\u2019s a platform for me to stand on when the world changes, and we\u2019re put to the test.”<\/p>\n

When asked what advice she would give to her younger self \u2014 the one who just met Grant and had no idea how her life would transform from that relationship \u2014 she laughed and said, “Snap out of it.”<\/p>\n

“We had wonderful times together,” she said. “[But] had I been able to go back and live it differently, I would\u2019ve. I\u2019m not as patient with myself as I used to be.”<\/p>\n

Cannon previously told Fox News Digital that these days, she\u2019s embracing the single life<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It took me a long time to learn how to be happy by myself because I really thought I was incomplete without a man in my life,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I was raised to think that you marry, you have children and that\u2019s what makes a happy life. And in my case, it wasn\u2019t. But I\u2019ve learned how to be happy alone. There\u2019s great freedom in that because then you don\u2019t settle for the broken set of dishes. You\u2019re not with somebody just because you\u2019re lonely. You\u2019re not with someone just because you\u2019re afraid to be alone.”<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m absolutely open to dating<\/a>,” Cannon continued. “There\u2019s no one in my life right now that I\u2019m dating, but I have two rescue puppies, and they\u2019re great company, and I have wonderful friends. Should the right one come along, I think [that will be] a real blessing to have.”<\/p>\n

While Cannon is open to finding love again, she doesn\u2019t envision herself saying “I do” once more.<\/p>\n

“I was forced to give up my career in marriage,” she said. “And looking back, I don\u2019t think I would do that again. I would not want to trade one for the other. But I think it\u2019s possible when you\u2019re with somebody who really supports you and loves you to manage both.”<\/p>\n

“I think we all have to be true to\u2026 our highest sense of right, not listen so much to what the world says we should be doing.\u2026 When I am in line with that, I\u2019m fine. And when I go against that, I mess it up badly.\u2026 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d want to get married again, but I would love to be able to sit down with somebody and hold hands and talk about the things that are important in life. I like that idea.”<\/p>\n
