Promotion:<\/a> Austrian facade specialist Rieder<\/a> has unveiled a production hall at its headquarters in Maishofen, Austria, built with over 1,300 square metres of timber. <\/p>\n

The hall, designed by architecture practice Kessler, was constructed from a mix of wood and concrete, which Rieder said has allowed for optimal use of both materials.<\/p>\n

Concrete was chosen for its durability and fire-protective quality, while wood was selected for its environmental credentials and warm aesthetic.<\/p>\n

“Together, they form a high-performance, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly construction method that has been exemplarily implemented in this project,” said Rieder.<\/p>\n

“Through the intelligent interplay of the two materials, a building has been created that is technically convincing, sets ecological benchmarks and at the same time offers a high quality of stay.”<\/p>\n

The hall has been built to expand Rieder’s production capacities, complementing the two existing facilities at its headquarters, which connect to it.<\/p>\n

“The overall architectural concept supports a modern working environment,” said Rieder owner Wolfgang Rieder.<\/p>\n

“With the completion of the second timber-hybrid hall, we were able to create numerous new jobs and strengthen the region as a business location.”<\/p>\n

Highlights of the building include its ceiling of 180 geometrical timber pyramids, which are designed to maximise light. According to Rieder, this has created optimal working conditions and a “harmonious spatial concept”.<\/p>\n

To reduce dust exposure, improve air quality and ensure optimal humidity in the production hall, the site is fitted with a humidification system.<\/p>\n

Externally, the building is clad in scrapcrete, a material crafted from the offcuts from Rieder’s production of glassfibre reinforced concrete, which the brand said are “repurposed into new applications and given a design value”.<\/p>\n

Scrapcrete was developed in collaboration with design studio Certain Measures using data-driven generative design techniques.<\/p>\n

According to the brand, these generative design techniques were used to analyse and record production leftovers and, in turn, create a project-specific facade design that gives the offcuts “a new life and aesthetic purpose”.<\/p>\n

“Scrapcrete follows a radically new design approach: instead of the usual process of creating a design first and then producing the necessary components, the process here starts with what already exists \u2013 the so-called leftover materials,” said the brand.<\/p>\n

“Under the motto ‘creating from what you have’, not only is waste reduced, but a new design language is also developed. The use of digital technologies rethinks the design process based on the resources available.”<\/p>\n

According to Rieder, the invention of scrapcrete has significantly reduced the company’s waste while establishing a new cladding material.<\/p>\n

“The result is not only a significant reduction of waste volume but also a high-quality architectural language that fuses sustainability, functionality and aesthetics \u2013 demonstrating how material scarcity can be turned into creative diversity,” said the company.<\/p>\n
