So while the term \u201cclean\u201d is subjective, we uncover what cyclists should pay attention to when preparing their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a20052687\/eat-these-foods-for-faster-recovery-from-injury-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a20052687\/eat-these-foods-for-faster-recovery-from-injury-0\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein-filled postride snack\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">protein-filled postride snack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What are the common contaminants in protein powders?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">According to the Clean Label Project <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanlabelproject.org\/protein-powder-white-paper\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/cleanlabelproject.org\/protein-powder-white-paper\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> that found contaminants in protein powders, most of which were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a41209835\/complete-protein-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a41209835\/complete-protein-examples\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"plant-based\" data-node-id=\"15.3\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plant-based<\/a> products, some of the substances found include arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead, and toxins like bisphenol A (BPA), commonly found in certain plastics. These substances (particularly the heavy metals), when consumed in high amounts that would lead to toxicity, may be linked to health concerns such as cancer, kidney dysfunction, and immune system dysfunction, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8078867\/#:~:text=Several%20acute%20and%20chronic%20toxic,et%20al.%2C%202020).\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8078867\/#:~:text=Several%20acute%20and%20chronic%20toxic,et%20al.%2C%202020).\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"15.5\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> published by Frontiers in Pharmacology in 2021.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While that may sound scary, it\u2019s important to note that we don\u2019t know if the contamination levels from protein powders are high enough to actually affect human health, Kadey says. In fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2214750020303632?via%3Dihub\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2214750020303632?via%3Dihub\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> published in a 2020 volume of Toxicology Reports found that despite the presence of heavy metals in protein powders, it is not likely that they will cause us to experience health problems if consumed in reasonable amounts, like a scoop of powder per day. (Children and pregnant women, however, should err on the side of caution, Kadey adds.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In addition to heavy metals, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/26895293.2023.2270722\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/26895293.2023.2270722\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> published in 2023 in All Life tested 23 food supplements and found that more than half of them contained undeclared anabolic steroids, despite the product package information claiming high efficacy and safety. <\/p>\n<p>What should cyclists look for in a clean protein powder?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Most cyclists are very busy with family, work, and training, so protein powder is a convenient option to save time while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a62282522\/protein-needs-for-seniors\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a62282522\/protein-needs-for-seniors\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"increasing protein intake\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">increasing protein intake<\/a>, especially as the nutrient helps with the recovery process after a ride. She explains that it\u2019s important for those who prefer artificial sweeteners to pay attention to how it reacts with their system.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In order to avoid possible steroid contamination in your protein powder, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usada.org\/athletes\/substances\/supplement-connect\/recognize-risk-when-you-see-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.usada.org\/athletes\/substances\/supplement-connect\/recognize-risk-when-you-see-it\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"guide\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">guide<\/a> on the risks of certain supplements containing steroids, and how to look out for them. They suggest avoiding labels that make false health claims and extreme performance-enhancing claims, and shying away from protein supplements with uncommon ingredient names that might indicate a steroid is present.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Looking at a protein powder\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a30626673\/common-ingredients-in-workout-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a30626673\/common-ingredients-in-workout-supplements\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"ingredient list\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ingredient list<\/a> and label information is the key to avoiding common contaminants. There are also certain certifications that can help you pick the most trustworthy postride protein powder.<\/p>\n<p>What should you look for on the label of clean protein powders?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">According to Kadey, label reading is the most important part of finding a quality protein powder to avoid extra \u201cfluff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Some labels indicate that a supplement has been third-party tested, meaning an independent organization has reviewed it. \u201cIf a protein powder is not third-party tested, we can\u2019t always believe that what\u2019s on the label is what\u2019s actually in there,\u201d Kelly says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So, which labels should you pay the most attention to when perusing the protein powder aisle? The gold standard label that dietitians typically look for in protein powders is the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.org\/knowledge-library\/what-is-nsf-certification\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.org\/knowledge-library\/what-is-nsf-certification\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NSF Certified for Sport\" data-node-id=\"28.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NSF Certified for Sport<\/a>\u201d label, according to Kelly, along with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/choice.wetestyoutrust.com\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/choice.wetestyoutrust.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Informed Choice\" data-node-id=\"28.3\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Informed Choice<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Additionally, the Clean Label Project is a nonprofit that certifies and awards products, such as protein powders and supplements, for being safe, pure, and true to their label. Find a third-party certification <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Step one: Look for NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Choice, Clean Label Project verified, or another independent organization\u2019s stamp of approval.<\/p>\n<p>2.
