Drew Barrymore<\/a> is opening up about a recent health scare on her talk show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Emmy-winning host and actress revealed that she underwent an \u201cemergency biopsy\u201d after receiving a \u201cbad mammogram\u201d during an interview with comedian and breast cancer survivor Tig Notaro<\/a> on Monday\u2019s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the thing I wanted to risk talking about on this show because I recently had a scare,\u201d Barrymore admitted. Turning to the audience, she added, \u201cI\u2019m completely fine, but I did get a bad mammogram and I got taken into that room and then I had an emergency biopsy. And I waited those five days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore\u2019s eyes welled up with tears as she reflected on the entire experience. Notaro, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, acknowledged, \u201cIt\u2019s a long wait.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had breast cancer and you have spoken about it humorously, eloquently, fiercely and brilliantly yourself,\u201d Barrymore said. \u201cHow did you calm yourself? How did you make peace with it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Notaro, who has been in remission since 2013 after undergoing both chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, confessed that the experience of having breast cancer \u201ccracked me open\u201d entirely.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went from being somebody that held everything to myself \u2014 I\u00a0was gonna do it on my own and I\u2019m okay,\u201d she said. \u201cEven when I came back from surgery, I had a double mastectomy and my closest friends were settling in to stay with me and I was like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m fine.\u2019 And I couldn\u2019t even lift my arms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cThey were like, \u2018You\u2019re all set, Tig?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Yep, I\u2019m all set. You guys can just head out now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore teased, \u201cI\u2019ll just martyr myself right into my bed and stay there for the next month!\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Notaro said that she can\u2019t encourage people enough to get over their fear of asking for help. \u201cIt is the greatest gift you can give yourself and the people that love you,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause people want to help. People want to do good, and it changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notaro was visiting The Drew Barrymore Show to promote her documentary Come See Me in the Good Light, which depicts the relationship between poet and activist Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley after Gibson is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, Tig, for opening this conversation so we can change the narrative on what\u2019s coming for all of us,\u201d Barrymore said. \u201cThat we can embrace it in a new way \u2014\u00a0your documentary is going to be groundbreaking and so important for people and it\u2019s one of the most beautiful love stories I\u2019ve ever seen in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore has spoken out about the importance of routine breast cancer screenings on her talk show, and even filmed an episode that featured herself getting a mammogram<\/a> in order to show viewers feel more comfortable with the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She also dedicated an entire October 2023 episode about breast cancer awareness to Drew Crew member Ross Mathews\u2019 late mom Gay, who died from the disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so heartbreaking, but it also taught me so much about strength and family and love,\u201d Mathews said on the show at the time. \u201cHow strong she was and how much I loved her and still do. It was such a gift to have that time.”<\/p>\n

Notaro, meanwhile, has also detailed her breast cancer experience in her 2014 stand-up special, Live, as well as in her 2016 memoir, I\u2019m Just A Person.\u00a0<\/p>\n
