{"id":113921,"date":"2025-11-03T23:43:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/113921\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T23:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:43:07","slug":"xi-jinping-cracks-joke-about-spying-with-phones-given-to-south-korean-president-xi-jinping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/113921\/","title":{"rendered":"Xi Jinping cracks joke about spying with phones given to South Korean president | Xi Jinping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It would take someone with nerves of steel to joke about the security of Chinese smartphones in front of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/xi-jinping\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xi Jinping<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Step forward the South Korean president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/lee-jae-myung\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lee Jae Myung<\/a>, who, after being given a pair of smartphones by the Chinese leader before their state banquet at the weekend, wondered out loud if the devices were secure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Xi, who is not known for public displays of humour, laughed and smiled as Lee\u2019s quip was translated into Chinese, before displaying some sharp wit of his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pointing at the phones, he invited Lee to \u201ccheck if there is a backdoor\u201d \u2013 prompting laughs and applause from his South Korean counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The lighthearted exchange took place as Xi and Lee exchanged gifts on the sidelines of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/01\/xi-jinpings-moment-and-whirlwind-diplomatic-tours-key-takeaways-from-the-apec-summit-in-south-korea\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apec summit<\/a> in the South Korean city of Gyeongju \u2013 Xi\u2019s first visit to the country in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Chinese president presented two Xiaomi smartphones fitted with Korean-made displays to Lee, who said: \u201cIs the communication line secure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pointing at the phones, still in their boxes, Xi replied: \u201cYou should check if there is a backdoor\u201d \u2013 a reference to pre-installed software that could allow third-party monitoring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2024\/dec\/04\/chinese-hackers-american-cell-phones\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US has warned <\/a>that Chinese smartphones and the apps they use may have \u201cbackdoors\u201d that could be used by hackers to exploit weak links in other countries\u2019 cyber defences. The Chinese government has denied allegations of cyber espionage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The leaders\u2019 conversation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z7MFxtSfqoU\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">captured<\/a> by TV cameras, generated huge media interest in South Korea as Xi rarely cracks jokes, especially on a subject as sensitive as espionage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cXi bursts into laughter after Lee jokes about security of Xiaomi Phones,\u201d a headline in the Seoul Shinmun newspaper said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The interaction was a particularly rare glimpse of Xi unfiltered. One of the only other times in recent memory was in September at a Chinese military parade in Beijing, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/03\/hot-mic-catches-vladimir-putin-xi-jinping-discussing-organ-transplants-immortality\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a hot mic caught a conversation<\/a> between Xi and probably the world\u2019s two other most secretive leaders \u2013 North Korea\u2019s Kim Jong-un and Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin \u2013 discussing organ transplants and immortality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A state media live feed of the trio walking into Tiananmen Square caught Putin\u2019s interpreter saying in Chinese: \u201cBiotechnology is continuously developing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHuman organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and even achieve immortality,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u200bOff camera, Xi\u200b responded: \u201cSome predict that in this century humans may live to 150 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Clips of the Xi-Lee exchange in Gyeongju have attracted online interest, with one YouTube user comparing the encounter to \u201cmartial arts masters trading lines in a duel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lee\u2019s spokesperson, Kim Nam-joon, said the moment of levity was proof that the two leaders had bonded during several meetings at the two-day summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFrom welcoming ceremonies and gift exchanges to a banquet and cultural performances, both leaders had multiple opportunities to engage and build personal chemistry,\u201d Kim said. \u201cIf it weren\u2019t for such chemistry, that kind of joke would not have been possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Xi did not leave empty-handed.
