Daniels C\/peopleimages.com \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>After letting out a sign, most people feel a sense of relief in their chest \u2014 a lightness or a relief.<\/p>\n<p>And according to a new study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adx6034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Science Advances<\/a> this month, that\u2019s not just mental: There are physical mechanisms at play.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that deep breaths, particularly long exhales, helped decrease surface tension in the lungs significantly more than regular, shallow breathing.<\/p>\n<p>As the lungs expand and contract while sighing, it help keep the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17373-pleural-effusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">small amount of fluid<\/a> that lines the lungs in an optimal arrangement. This fluid keeps the tissues moist and prevents friction when breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason not to take short breaths? DimaBerlin \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Sighing it out not only helps keep the lungs elastic but can provide instant <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/25\/health\/health-coach-reveals-5-ways-you-can-reduce-stress-in-your-life\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relief from stress<\/a> and frustration.<\/p>\n<p>A type of breath work called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9873947\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cyclic sighing<\/a>\u201c, or prolonged exhalation, is a proven effective stress management tool, especially if done for five minutes every day.<\/p>\n<p>This method of breath work was even shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/03\/28\/how-to-get-in-a-good-mood-in-just-12-minutes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">improve mood<\/a> the most and reduce breathing rate.<\/p>\n<p>But a sigh isn\u2019t just a sign of feeling annoyed. Deep exhaling is also necessary for a properly working respiratory system.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the tiny sacs of air in the lungs (known as <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4427060\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alveoli<\/a>) collapse. A sigh helps expand the lungs and reset these sacs.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a big sigh is also connected with negative emotions like fear, anxiety, sadness and even pain, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0301051122000552\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2022 study<\/a> found.<\/p>\n<p>But while big exhales can provide some relief, <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/i-sigh-a-lot-what-does-that-mean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sighing too much<\/a> may be a sign of anxiety or prolonged stress.
