{"id":115670,"date":"2025-11-04T22:31:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T22:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/115670\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T22:31:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T22:31:09","slug":"lanza-atelier-shrouds-circular-mexico-city-pavilion-in-chains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/115670\/","title":{"rendered":"Lanza Atelier shrouds circular Mexico City pavilion in chains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lanza-atelier\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lanza Atelier<\/a> has created a pavilion in the plaza of a famed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mexico-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico City<\/a> shopping centre, with a wooden platform surrounding a central reflecting pool.<\/p>\n<p>Named A10 Pavilion, the eight-metre-tall structure was built directly on top of a fountain in the plaza of El Palacio de Hierro in Mexico City&#8217;s affluent Polanco neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265975 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/lanza-metal-chain-pavilion-mexico_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Circular pavilion in Mexico at El Palacio de Hierro\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Lanza Atelier has created a round pavilion in Mexico City<\/p>\n<p>Mexican architecture firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/sordo-madaleno-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos<\/a> designed the monumental commercial centre in 2014, which is one of several locations for the historic department store in the city. Across the street stands the yellow-roofed modernist Church and Parish of San Ignacio de Loyola, also designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/sordomadaleno.com\/projects\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos<\/a> \u2013 but in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lanzaatelier.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lanza Atelier<\/a> worked with curator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/madamemallet\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ana Elena Mallet<\/a> to mark the 1o-year anniversary of El Palacio de Hierro in Polanco, conceptualising the pavilion as a smaller palacio de hierro (palace of iron).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265982 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/lanza-metal-chain-pavilion-mexico_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Chain pavilion by Lanza Atelier \" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It was designed to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of El Palacio de Hierro&#8217;s Polanco location<\/p>\n<p>The circular structure was shrouded in galvanised chains through which water that \u00a0constantly drips. This, along with the reflective quality of the steel, gives the pavilion a &#8220;dynamic, living quality&#8221; according to the studio.<\/p>\n<p>The design team wanted it to be a celebratory gesture, but also usable and open to the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265969 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/lanza-metal-chain-pavilion-mexico_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Circular pavillion by Lanza Atelier\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1772\"  \/>The circular pavilion was clad in chains that drip water<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[It is] highly permeable, allowing passersby to glimpse inside, while inviting visitors to ascend to a viewing platform 4.5 meters above ground,&#8221; said Lanza Atelier<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From there, they can enjoy new perspectives of the surrounding city and a close relationship with the nearby treetops and their blossoms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265965 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/lanza-metal-chain-pavilion-mexico_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Simple steel structural joints and staircase\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It has two levels supported by a simple steel structure<\/p>\n<p>Taking the many public fountains of Mexico City as reference, the studio included a reflecting pool in the centre of the pavilion directly above the permanent fountain. The pool was surrounded by a circular wooden bench.<\/p>\n<p>The water in the reflecting pool appears black due to the cladding of the pool&#8217;s interior and water drips into it from four points in the circular awning that tops the pavilion \u2013 a reference to the four primary fountains across the city.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265966 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/lanza-metal-chain-pavilion-mexico_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Reflecting pool\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A reflecting pool that appears black sits in the center<\/p>\n<p>In order to create a vantage point, a walkway accessed via steel stairs wraps halfway up the structure.<\/p>\n<p>Its steel legs and structural elements were left mostly exposed, giving the pavilion a contemporary, industrial appearance, concealed slightly by the more than 1,500 sparkling, water-covered chains.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2022\/10\/19\/kriskadecor-aluminium-chains-facade-cladding-solution-kriskadecor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/kriskadecor-outdoor-cladding-system-design_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Kriskadecor outdoor cladding system at Milan design week 2022\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Kriskadecor makes aluminium chains into expressive facade cladding solution\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, it wanted to celebrate the confluence of city and water with a &#8220;meditative space&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We proposed creating a contemplative space open to the public, positioned directly above this fountain, which would itself function as a large fountain,&#8221; said Lanza Atelier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pavilion \u2013 an exploration of water and the city \u2013 also enriches the public space of the neighborhood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265980 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/lanza-metal-chain-pavilion-mexico_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Chains on Lanza Atelier pavilion\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Water circulates throughout the structure<\/p>\n<p>Also included in the design is a small coffee cart, fabricated from found materials by local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exsoup.net\/info.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ex-Soup<\/a>, whose recycled furniture has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/12\/20\/javier-guzman-cervantes-exsoup-reclaimed-furniture-mexico\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">featured previoulsy in Dezeen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by Andr\u00e9s Cedillo \/ Espacios.<\/p>\n<p>A10 pavilion is on show from 7 October to 6 November in Mexico City.
