{"id":118268,"date":"2025-11-06T08:33:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T08:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/118268\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T08:33:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T08:33:08","slug":"china-uses-mars-orbiter-to-snap-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-the-register","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/118268\/","title":{"rendered":"China uses Mars orbiter to snap interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS \u2022 The Register"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China has matched the European Space Agency\u2019s feat of taking a snapshot of interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS from a Mars orbiter.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers spotted 3I\/ATLAS in July and the Minor Planet Center <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/minorplanetcenter.net\/mpec\/K25\/K25N12.html\">noted<\/a> its \u201chighly eccentric, hyperbolic orbit\u201d that suggested it came from outside our solar system. Later analysis confirmed that theory, making 3I\/Atlas just the third such object humanity has ever observed, after the 2017 discovery of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/03\/23\/firstknown_interstellar_solar_system_visitor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1I\/Oumuamua<\/a> and 2020\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/04\/28\/comet_2i_borisov_water\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2I\/Borisov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interest in such objects is naturally high so NASA <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/3i-atlas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">used the Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> to check it out in July.<\/p>\n<p>In early October the European Space Agency (ESA) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/ESA_s_ExoMars_and_Mars_Express_observe_comet_3I_ATLAS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pointed<\/a> its ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and Mars Express craft at the comet, because it passed just 30 million km from the Red Planet. The orbiters were therefore closer to the comet than other observatories.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s National Space Agency (CNSA) today <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsa.gov.cn\/n6758823\/n6758838\/c10715343\/content.html\">announced<\/a> its Tianwen-1 orbiter also snapped 3I\/Atlas in early October and posted a fuzzy pic of the object.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2025\/11\/06\/supplied_cnsa_3i_atlas.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/supplied_cnsa_3i_atlas.jpg\" alt=\"Atlas image captured by the high-resolution camera of the Tianwen-1 orbiter.\" title=\"Atlas image captured by the high-resolution camera of the Tianwen-1 orbiter.\" height=\"364\" width=\"648\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text_center\">Atlas image captured by the high-resolution camera of the Tianwen-1 orbiter. &#8211; Click to enlarge<\/p>\n<p>The quality of that image is excusable: The CNSA and ESA both explained that they designed their Mars orbiters to observe the Red Planet, not small, dim, distant, and fast-moving targets like 3I\/Atlas.<\/p>\n<p>The CNSA\u2019s post outlines the difficulties associated with snapping 3I\/Atlas by pointing out that it moves at approximately 58 kilometers per second, making its relative velocity compared to Tianwen-1 86 kilometers per second. The interstellar object is also small \u2013 probably just 5.6 kilometers in diameter \u2013 and dim.<\/p>\n<p>A pre-press <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2510.25035\">paper<\/a> [PDF] published in late October found the comet \u201cappears distinctly bluer than the Sun,\u201d after initial observations suggested its dust plume might be somewhat red. The paper also notes 3I\/Atlas \u201crapidly brightened on its final approach toward perihelion,\u201d as you\u2019d expect given approaching the Sun causes some of the stuff comets are made of to boil away and\/or shake loose to produce a visible \u201ctail\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The good news or the bad news?<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement showed off China\u2019s prowess in space, after the nation\u2019s Manned Space Agency yesterday had the less pleasant duty of announcing the postponement of a return flight from its space station after detecting damage on its Shenzhou-20 spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>The agency yesterday <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cmse.gov.cn\/xwzx\/202511\/t20251105_57040.html\">revealed<\/a> \u201cThe Shenzhou-20 manned spacecraft is suspected of being struck by a small piece of space debris, and impact analysis and risk assessment are underway.\u201d \u201cTo ensure the safety and health of the astronauts and the complete success of the mission, it has been decided that the Shenzhou-20 return mission, originally scheduled for November 5th, will be postponed,\u201d the agency advised.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been no word since on damage to the craft or when it might return.<\/p>\n<p>Shenzhou-20 docked at China\u2019s space station in late April, and its successor Shenzhou-21 arrived on October 31st. China designed its space station to host three Taikonauts, other than during the brief periods when crews overlap.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear how long the space station can host six visitors, but earlier this week all six Taikonauts celebrated the installation of a new oven by enjoying a barbecue dinner.
