\n\tYou can smell Kristin Chenoweth\u2019s dressing rooms before they come into view. It\u2019s hours shy of opening night of her newest musical, \u201cThe Queen of Versailles<\/a>,\u201d and the hallway leading to dressing rooms 301 and 302 at the St. James Theatre is lined with countless floral arrangements, with more being delivered by the minute. The flowers sit underneath a series of prints made by the artist Pepe Munoz depicting Chenoweth\u2019s various famous stage characters, like Glinda from \u201cWicked,\u201d Sally Brown from \u201cYou\u2019re a Good Man, Charlie Brown\u201d and Precious McGuire from \u201cSteel Pier\u201d (her Broadway<\/a> debut), all mixed with Jackie Siegel, her character in \u201cThe Queen of Versailles.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s a fitting scene for the Broadway<\/a> legend, who returns to the stage in the new musical about Siegel, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. \u201cThe Queen of Versailles\u201d is inspired by the 2012 documentary about Siegel, a Floridian socialite, and the making of her mega mansion, named Versailles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m so excited,\u201d Chenoweth says from her chair, cloaked in a pink bathrobe between applying her lashes and doing her body makeup. The dressing rooms, and everything in them, are pink, the show\u2019s signature color.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut more champagne pink,\u201d Chenoweth clarifies. \u201cBecause right now I\u2019m playing the queen of Versailles. Now we all know that I have another shade of pink that is definitely my shade,\u201d referencing \u201cWicked.\u201d \u201cI had to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tChenoweth was drawn to the role for what it says about excess and \u201cwhen is enough, enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had a lady at yoga come up to me the other day and she said, \u2018I want to tell you, I saw your show Saturday,\u2019 and I learned a long time ago never to say, \u2018well, what did you do think?\u2019\u201d Chenoweth says, \u201cbut she said \u2018number one, since I\u2019ve seen it, I can\u2019t stop thinking about it. And number two, as I was sitting there, I thought, do I need all the stuff that I have? Do I have too much? I\u2019m starting to think about things a little differently.\u2019 And to me, that was just the most wonderful,\u201d Chenoweth adds. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe show wasn\u2019t just about that. But for me, especially in the times that we live, we\u2019re so divided, and I don\u2019t care who you are, I think this show can unite because it shines a light on what we all think we want.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor opening night, Chenoweth worked with designer Christian Cowan<\/a>, who also did the show\u2019s costumes<\/a>, on a custom gown.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe funny story about it is I wanted to wear a pantsuit, a kickass pantsuit,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd about two weeks ago he called me and was like, \u2018Yeah, no, we\u2019re not doing that. I\u2019ve changed my mind.\u2019 There was a dress that went viral that we both really love, that he designed. And it\u2019s in that vein.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dress featured a black corset that \u201crearranges some of my organs with how tight the dress is,\u201d but it\u2019s a fashion sacrifice she\u2019s willing to make. \u201cAnd I only have to wear it for a few minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLike any stage performer, Chenoweth has a series of superstitions ahead of an opening night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI do a little bit of yoga. I pray. That\u2019s my thing. I call my mom. She\u2019s not here tonight, but I call her because I want to talk to her on stage,\u201d she says. \u201cThose are the three things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the performance, the cast was heading over to The Plaza for the opening night celebration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI still can\u2019t believe that we\u2019re having our party at the Plaza. This is some old school stuff, and it feels right,\u201d Chenoweth says. \u201cWhen I was young and made my Broadway debut, we had our opening night party at Tavern on the Green. And I thought then, \u2018wow.\u2019 And I feel like that in the same vein [tonight]. I wish I could tell the young kids in the show, the youngs I call them, that this is really special. But they\u2019ll find out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite starring in a Broadway show, Chenoweth still plans to make time to go see the second \u201cWicked<\/a>\u201d movie when it hits theaters.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m going to go on opening weekend. I want to see it on the big screen,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve got to see the girls, I\u2019ve got to see the new songs, which I sort of know about, but I\u2019m really excited.\u201d<\/p>\n
