My core strength, however, has never been better &#8211; something I\u2019m attributing to my dedication to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/pilates-workout-at-home\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/pilates-workout-at-home\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home Pilates workouts<\/a> and more low-impact strength training. But we know that when it comes to building (or maintaining) strength, it\u2019s not as simple as taking your foot off the gas in one area to focus on another.<\/p>\n<p>Determined to address my bodily imbalance, I spoke to the experts. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edwinajenner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.edwinajenner.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Edwina Jenner<\/a>, a personal trainer and women&#8217;s fitness specialist, recommended plank rows as they are &#8220;essentially two powerful moves combined &#8211; a plank and a row movement,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"1011d511-a38a-4626-b915-fe838affe0be-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">I&#8217;d tried <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/side-plank-exercise\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/side-plank-exercise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">side planks<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/reverse-plank-exercise\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/reverse-plank-exercise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reverse planks<\/a> before, but plank rows were a brand new variation for me. I decided to do them as a finisher after my Pilates workout, and after two weeks, they&#8217;re a permanent part of my routine.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-e2932ca3-73da-4fad-ad8d-2bf1241d8af9\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What are plank rows?<\/p>\n<p id=\"357e6d4c-421e-4082-9f54-1e7da453d053\">The plank row is the classic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/how-to-do-a-plank\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/how-to-do-a-plank\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plank exercise<\/a> and a dumbbell row in one movement. All you need to do it is a yoga mat and a pair of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-dumbbells\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-dumbbells\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dumbbells<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They target your core, shoulders, back, and arms simultaneously,&#8221; says Jenner. &#8220;It&#8217;s a brilliant move for building upper body and core strength, and teaching your muscles to stabilise your spine as you move.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Plank rows are a compound movement, which means they target multiple muscles simultaneously. If you&#8217;re short on time, a routine with more exercises like this can make life easier &#8211; and more efficient.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-1ec13b8a-8b28-4c1c-ba36-f26f78c86841\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Can you do plank rows without dumbbells?<\/p>\n<p id=\"b3c4b44d-85b2-4990-8467-07314dc553bc\">While traditionally performed with a weight in each hand, Jenner says that you can &#8220;absolutely do this move without weights, especially if you&#8217;re new to strength training or want to build up your confidence&#8221;. Bodyweight versions still challenge your stability, core, and strength; the key is to maintain control rather than speed,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3c00c5d3-c76b-418e-9436-f46d46c24ef3\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>How to do plank rows<\/p>\n<p id=\"a565df9e-8c4a-40f0-9d64-39158948c93a\">We do go on about form and technique, but for good reason: in strength training in particular, performing a move correctly serves a triple purpose, improving performance, preventing injury and maximising effectiveness for results you can really notice.<\/p>\n<p>Here, personal trainer and founder of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meetyouatthebarre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.meetyouatthebarre.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Meet You At The Barre<\/a>, Jennie Brown, explains how to execute the perfect plank row.<\/p>\n<p>Start in a strong high plank, with wrists under shoulders, body in a straight line and core tight.Have your feet hip-width or wider for more stability.Shift your weight slightly to one side and row the opposite elbow towards your hip, keeping it close to your body.Avoid twisting or letting your hips lift or drop. If you do, good for you. So, I asked the experts how to make it easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeginners can do them from hands and knees (all-fours row), on an incline (hands on a bench or sofa) and\/or with wider feet for more balance,&#8221; says Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re sure you can keep your hips steady and feel your back working (not your lower back or neck), you can progress to full plank rows or add in some light dumbbells.<\/p>\n<p>Remember: it\u2019s form first, always. \u201cMaster the stability first,\u201d warns Brown. \u201cIt\u2019s not about how heavy you go, it\u2019s about how well you control the move.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Until very recently, my upper body strength has been questionable, at best.
