Habitat loss, disease and pesticides have contributed to their decline but in recent years they have faced a growing threat: wind turbines. According to the UN Environment Programme, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.int\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/fact_sheet2_9_sep_2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">millions of bats globally<\/a> are killed by turbines each year. <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/74\/4\/240\/7639565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Estimated<\/a> annual bat deaths from turbine blades include around 50,000 in Canada, over 200,000 in Germany and more than 500,000 in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h00063b6ntxmc3ffm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As well as their hugely important ecological roles, bats are crucial to global economies, explains professor Winifred Frick, chief scientist at the nonprofit Bat Conservation International. Many species consume agricultural insect pests, some disperse fruit seeds and others act as essential crop pollinators. <a href=\"https:\/\/esa.org\/esablog\/2011\/06\/22\/pollination-from-the-plants-perspective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mexican long-nosed bats and lesser long-nosed bats<\/a>, for example, pollinate the agave plant, which is what tequila is made from \u2014 \u201cif you like your margarita, toast to a bat,\u201d Frick jokes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h00073b6ns8ajojx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960982208007513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">early research<\/a> into the major cause of turbine-induced bat deaths pointed to barotrauma \u2014 where dramatic pressure changes near turbine blades rupture bats\u2019 internal organs \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/tethys.pnnl.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/summaries\/WREN-2023-Bats-Barotrauma.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more recent evidence<\/a> suggests that most die from direct impact with the blades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h00083b6nzxbqs1nk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the cause of death isn\u2019t what\u2019s important, says Frick \u2014 either way, bats are being killed in their millions. While wind provides an important source of renewable energy \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/energy-system\/renewables\/wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accounting for 8%<\/a> of all global electricity \u2014 it should be operated \u201cresponsibly so that it doesn\u2019t cause declines in bat populations,\u201d she adds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000a3b6nnxawo9e7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0048969723000190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">many countries<\/a>, developers must carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment before installing a wind farm. A spokesperson for the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) said in an email that \u201cNature reserves, breeding grounds, and important biodiverse areas will usually be excluded from consideration for potential wind farm locations,\u201d and that during the development process, surveys investigate the potential impact on habitats and wildlife migration routes.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/batcon-mexican-free-tailed-bat-josh-hydeman.png\" alt=\"Mexican free-tailed bats in flight.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"533\" width=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000b3b6nfzgp41h6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, researchers have noted that regulation to protect bats from wind turbines varies greatly across the globe and can be <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/74\/4\/240\/7639565#448655348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">poorly enforced<\/a>. Voluntary compliance \u201cis problematic on a global scale and therefore virtually nonexistent,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/74\/4\/240\/7639565#448655348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to one study<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000c3b6ntsfvlox0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once a wind farm is built, the main strategy currently used to protect bats from turbines is \u201cblanket curtailment\u201d\u2014 effectively pausing the turbines at low wind speeds when bats are <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/we.2741#:~:text=Whitby%20et%20al.-,8,months%20in%20spring%20and%20summer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">most likely to be present<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000d3b6nibh0tbpy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An analysis of published research found that this method reduced bat fatalities by <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/we.2741#:~:text=Whitby%20et%20al.-,8,months%20in%20spring%20and%20summer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">over 60%<\/a> \u2014 when turbines were stopped below wind speeds of 5 meters per second, from dusk to dawn, between mid-July and mid-October. However, simulations show that this could also reduce annual energy generation of the turbines by <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/we.2741#:~:text=Whitby%20et%20al.-,8,months%20in%20spring%20and%20summer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">over 10%<\/a>, in certain regions and under some curtailment scenarios.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000e3b6nq7eo2cvu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One solution to reduce energy generation loss is \u201csmart curtailment,\u201d which aims to \u201cprotect the bats when they are at risk and let the turbines operate when there are no bats at risk,\u201d says Kevin Denman, managing director of US-based EchoSense.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000f3b6n3x4j9imd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His company does this by fitting sensors to turbines to listen out for the acoustic signals made by bats when they echolocate \u2014 navigate through their aerial environment using high frequency sounds. When these signals are detected, nearby turbines are curtailed in response, giving the bats enough time to pass by unharmed.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/echosense-installation.jpeg\" alt=\"Installing an EchoSense sensor on a turbine.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3024\" width=\"4032\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000g3b6n4b2qpsri@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOur system returned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osti.gov\/servlets\/purl\/2212448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">roughly 50%<\/a> of that energy that was lost with the blanket curtailment strategy,\u201d says Denman, in reference to a 2023 study that was co-funded by the US Department of Energy. The study also found that the system resulted in \u201cno significant difference in bat fatalities compared to blanket curtailment.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000h3b6npsrqi0zg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several other companies worldwide are developing detection systems: France-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biodiv-wind.com\/biodiv-wind-featured-in-the-latest-edition-of-fortechs-wind-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Biodiv-Wind<\/a> uses infrared cameras for bat detection, while Spanish company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dtbird.com\/en\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DTBird &amp; DTBat<\/a> uses AI to identify individual bat species from their calls in real time. While his company doesn\u2019t use this technology, such species-identifying AI systems could allow for selective turbine curtailment for endangered bat species, says Roger Rodriguez, bat biologist at EchoSense.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000i3b6n72olsary@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked about \u201csmart curtailment\u201d technologies, the GWEC spokesperson said: \u201cThe wind industry welcomes every step taken to balance the generation of clean and renewable electricity with the protection of nature,\u201d adding that bio-acoustic technologies \u201care often required in wind farms to ensure the turbines operate with little risk to local bat populations.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000j3b6ngx814rze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another approach being tested involves discouraging bats from approaching the \u201crotor swept area\u201d of turbines \u2014 the danger zone for bats \u2014 using ultrasonic deterrents. \u201cYou\u2019re basically creating a very loud environment,\u201d says Leon Hailstones, marketing vice president at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrgsystems.com\/products\/bat-deterrent-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NRG Systems,<\/a> which has developed the technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000k3b6nm0knpz3x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Its system uses speakers mounted to a turbine to blast ultrasonic sounds \u2014 inaudible to humans \u2014 spanning the frequency range that many impacted bat species use for echolocation. The theory is that this will disorient the bats and so they will tend to avoid these airspaces, says Hailstones. Used in conjunction with curtailment, he suggests that deterrents might further help to reduce bat fatalities and improve turbine energy output.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000l3b6n99v3f4oo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2351989420301827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studies<\/a> have shown that ultrasonic acoustic deterrents can be effective for certain bat species, but that more research is needed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhop926h000m3b6ncd4ijrt2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, \u201cThere\u2019s some evidence that acoustic deterrents actually can increase fatalities of certain species of bats,\u201d due to their natural curiosity, says Frick. In addition, \u201chigh frequency sound doesn\u2019t travel that far\u201d and so adequately covering the rotor-swept area is problematic, she says.
