{"id":128569,"date":"2025-11-12T02:32:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T02:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/128569\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T02:32:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T02:32:11","slug":"strongest-solar-flare-of-2025-erupts-and-it-could-bring-auroras-to-half-the-us-on-wednesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/128569\/","title":{"rendered":"Strongest solar flare of 2025 erupts \u2014 and it could bring auroras to half the US on Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"736789ed-51ea-41cc-a111-62da37929063\">Three powerful outbursts of solar plasma are barrelling toward Earth, with dazzling auroras possible across the northern half of the United States over the coming nights.<\/p>\n<p>Minor auroral activity is possible at high latitudes tonight (Nov. 11), but Wednesday (Nov. 12) could bring the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/northern-lights\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/northern-lights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Lights<\/a> as far south as northern California and Alabama, according to an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/g4-severe-watch-effect-12-november\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/g4-severe-watch-effect-12-november\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">alert<\/a> from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). There could also be a strong showing of auroras on Thursday (Nov. 13), NOAA added, though that forecast may change as more data comes in over the coming days.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"736789ed-51ea-41cc-a111-62da37929063-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The three solar outbursts headed our way \u2014 known as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-are-coronal-mass-ejections\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-are-coronal-mass-ejections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejections<\/a> (CMEs) \u2014 were all launched from a particularly active sunspot called AR4274, which is currently aimed toward Earth. The first two CMEs erupted on Nov. 9 and Nov. 10, respectively, and were each triggered by powerful X-class solar flares \u2014 the most powerful class of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-flare\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-flare\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar flare<\/a> on NOAA&#8217;s space weather prediction scale.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">These flares were categorized as class X1.7 and X1.2, and the resulting CMEs have a chance to combine with or &#8220;cannibalize&#8221; each other as they speed toward Earth, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/sun-unleashes-strongest-solar-flare-of-2025-sparking-radio-blackouts-across-africa-and-europe\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/sun-unleashes-strongest-solar-flare-of-2025-sparking-radio-blackouts-across-africa-and-europe\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a> Live Science&#8217;s sister site Space.com. These first two CMEs are expected to hit sometime tonight.<\/p>\n<p>The third, and most powerful CME, was launched on Tuesday morning following the eruption of a gargantuan X5.1 solar flare \u2014 almost five times the intensity of the two preceding flares, and the single strongest solar flare of 2025 so far. The powerful flare triggered radio blackouts over Europe and Africa shortly after it erupted, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/space.com\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"http:\/\/space.com\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:110.14%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/9UT9kkUq3o5UEgqDAfVFiU.png\" alt=\"A map of tonight's aurora forecast\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/9UT9kkUq3o5UEgqDAfVFiU.png\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/9UT9kkUq3o5UEgqDAfVFiU.png\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>NOAA predicts strong auroral activity across the northern United States over the next two to three nights. Combined with the effects of the two prior outbursts, this could cause serious disturbances to Earth&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38059-magnetism.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38059-magnetism.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic field<\/a>. NOAA predicts the resulting geomagnetic storm could reach &#8220;severe&#8221; G4 levels \u2014 the second highest level on the agency&#8217;s scale.<\/p>\n<p>Besides plunging the Northern Lights to much lower latitudes than usual, G4-class geomagnetic storms can cause power grid fluctuations, low-frequency radio disturbances, and GPS errors, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NOAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8bb0e2e0-d497-46ca-9911-b22e44f1fb6e\">There is nothing that an average person needs to do to prepare for a geomagnetic storm. However, if you wish to go aurora hunting over the coming nights, find a dark sky location as far from artificial lights as possible and allow about 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust. You don&#8217;t need any special equipment to see the aurora, but the colors can sometimes look even more vibrant through a digital camera or phone screen, as they have a large aperture to let in light.<\/p>\n<p>Solar flares, CMEs, and geomagnetic storms all become more common \u2014 and more intense \u2014 during solar maximum, the peak of the sun&#8217;s roughly 11-year activity cycle.
