For the two, who are longtime friends, the answer finally came—in the form of objects they have each lived with. For McGrath this was Roman, Pre-Columbian, and Chinese antiquities, and for Bargo, mid-century French design by the likes of Jean Prouvé that he has painstakingly collected over the years. Now, they have put these seemingly disparate collections on display in McGrath’s recently opened downtown New York gallery space.

“The pairing felt both timely and inevitable,” says McGrath of the show, which features such juxtapositions as a Pierre Patout bookcase displaying Teotihuacan and Olmec masks. “There’s a tension there—it’s these really rarefied objects from both spectrums,” says Bargo. “Beautiful museum-quality antiquities, and then these raw, industrial pieces of furniture that were designed for the everyday man.”

And then there’s a third, entirely unexpected ingredient to the show: photographs of interiors by Bruce Weber. Over a Prouvé daybed, for example, hangs an oversize photo of a Grecian-style statue photographed at Chatsworth, the English estate of the Duchess of Devonshire. Behind a pre-Columbian torso and mask on pedestals hang Weber’s photographs taken at Manuel Alvarez Bravo’s house. A Roman bust sits in front of a snapshot of Sofia Coppola’s overflowing Los Angeles office, representing the opposition of control and chaos, as McGrath sees it.

Bruce Weber

Over a Prouvé daybed hangs an oversized Weber photo of a Grecian-style statue shot at Chatsworth, the English estate of the Duchess of Devonshire

“I never really did anything like this before,” says Weber, who was intrigued by the two friends’ request to see photographs of interiors. “I said, yeah, sure, that sounds different for me…It’s really funny, because I just take pictures inside places that I like, where I want to sit down on the couch or go to sleep on the sofa,” which in his case means at Cy Twombly’s residence in Gaeta or Jil Sander’s home in Hamburg.

Of Coppola’s overflowing desk, for example, Weber says, “It was a mess—and I loved it. I don’t want to redecorate the place.”

“Bruce shoots things in a really raw, romantic way,” says Bargo. “I feel like so frequently, interiors photographers only shoot things in a straightforward, glossy, everything-styled-perfectly way. The beauty of his are that they are of a surfer’s shack in Montauk that on the surface has zero appeal whatsoever.”

Bruce Weber

Sofia Coppola’s desk in her Los Angeles office, as photographed by Bruce Weber.

Bargo and McGrath were given carte blanche to Weber’s archive, and had the difficult task of narrowing the selection down to 20. As it turned out, they were mostly in sync, with each one unwittingly selecting images the other had already ear-marked. “Everything just seemed to make sense,” says Bargo. “They all seemed cohesive as a body of work.”

For McGrath, there is a through line connecting each section of the exhibition, which is up until December 3rd: “The antiquities are literal, historical icons; the Prouvé furniture started off as very utilitarian, modernist furniture and now has become the premier icon of modernism; and Bruce is one of the most iconic photographers of the 90s,” he says, pointing out that this body of work is largely still unknown. For Weber, “these pictures were of people who were my friends, not just people I worked with,” he says, reminiscing about Iman and David Bowie, and visiting the late model Stella Tennant at Chatsworth.

Bruce Weber

The exhibit at McGrath’s recently opened downtown New York gallery space.

“There’s a beautiful narrative in the sense that it’s very personal for us,” says Bargo.

“It’s the antithesis of this Instagram age,” says McGrath. “Furniture that has stood the test of time and for the antiquities, these are things that are still so beautiful after tens of thousands of years. There’s something about the permanence.”

And in the truest test of a show that just works: It took two hours to install.
