{"id":131075,"date":"2025-11-13T12:55:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T12:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/131075\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T12:55:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T12:55:13","slug":"swiss-researchers-pioneer-robot-assisted-recycling-for-ev-lithium-ion-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/131075\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss researchers pioneer robot-assisted recycling for EV lithium-ion batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers in Switzerland have taken an important step toward circular mobility by developing a robotic system that extends the sustainable second life of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Completed under the CircuBAT research project, the innovative solution closes the loop between production, use, and recycling of automotive lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Led by the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), the project brought together seven Swiss research institutions and 24 companies to investigate novel ways of optimizing every stage of a battery\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past four years, scientists have designed robotic and automated systems capable of safely dismantling, sorting, and upcycling used lithium-ion cells. This process has traditionally been seen as labor-intensive and hazardous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have developed innovative solutions that are attracting worldwide attention,\u201d Andrea Vezzini, PhD, an industrial electronics professor at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) and project manager, said. <\/p>\n<p>Automating safe recycling<\/p>\n<p>Electric vehicles are crucial in the transition to cleaner transportation. Still, their batteries remain notoriously difficult to recycle. In 2019, global EV battery waste totaled around 500,000 tons, with scientists estimating it could increase to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20250404-where-ev-batteries-go-to-die-and-be-reborn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">eight million tons<\/a> by 2040. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, instead of treating them as waste, the Swiss research consortium set out to create a new circular process that extends battery life, enhances recycling efficiency, and minimizes environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>The robot-assisted recycling system was designed at the Swiss Battery Technology Center (SBTC) in Biel\/Bienne. It uses <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/energy\/robot-arms-for-nuclear-reactor-upkeep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">precision robotics<\/a> to separate battery modules and recover high-quality raw materials with minimal manual handling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/A1_f98126.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-220174\"   title=\"EV batteries get second life with new robotic recycling system\"\/>Nora Bartolom\u00e9 (Empa) and Olivier Groux (Kyburz Schweiz AG) work together on recovering high-quality raw materials from lithium-ion batteries.<br \/>Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfh.ch\/en\/news\/news\/2025\/abschlusskonferenz-circubat2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Innosuisse<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese solutions represent a first step on the way to closing the <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/transportation\/how-loop-ev-charging-network-is-shaping-the-ev-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">battery loop<\/a> with stations distributed around the globe,\u2019 Vezzini concluded in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empa.ch\/web\/s604\/circubat-konferenz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the project also addressed <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/energy\/batteries-could-get-lifespan-boost-imaging-method\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">battery life<\/a> extension and reuse. The team also developed a \u201cBattery Expert System\u201d that can compare the aging patterns of thousands of cells. This tool helps engineers determine which cells can be repaired or repurposed.<\/p>\n<p>According to the research team, some retired EV batteries can be converted into stationary energy storage systems. These can serve a second life as backup power units for buildings or renewable energy grids.<\/p>\n<p>Sustainable battery reuse<\/p>\n<p>To make these systems scalable, the researchers designed automated dismantling processes and direct material recovery methods. The results could also help accelerate the transition to renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>CircuBAT is part of the Flagship Initiative of Innosuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency. The closing conference, CircuBAT2025, will take place on November 13 and 14 in the BERNEXPO Foyer.
