Hospitals in New Jersey rank third best in the nation for keeping patients safe from falls, infections and avoidable errors that may leave them sicker than before their admission, according to the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety report card<\/a>.<\/p>\n

New Jersey hospitals typically rank in the top 10 in the survey that uses an array of expert-approved public data and patient surveys to give hospitals a grade from A to F. New Jersey also was third safest <\/a>in May in the biannual survey that began in 2012.<\/p>\n

Five hospitals in New Jersey went up a grade, six went down, and 56 had no change, according to the report. There was one hospital that scored a D: Carewell Health Medical Center<\/a> in East Orange, which has been under state scrutiny. <\/a>No hospital flunked, according to the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud of the commitment to transparency and safety shown by our New Jersey hospitals,\u201d said Adelisa Perez-Hudgins, vice president of quality at the Health Care Quality Institute of New Jersey, which collaborates with Leapfrog to promote the report card. \u201cWe congratulate our \u2018A\u2019 hospitals and continue to support all hospitals working to improve patient outcomes and experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among hospital safety surveys, healthcare advocates and researchers have tended to favor Leapfrog<\/a>. Its dataset is vast, with hospitals judged on 30 measures. The score was devised by a peer-reviewed panel of medical safety experts. But some hospital executives have criticized the score because the data may lag by a couple of years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Leapfrog Group was founded 25 years ago to improve American health care through transparency, and the Safety Grade has been a cornerstone of that effort,\u201d said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. The organization was founded by large employers to combat the rising wave of medical mistakes that raise health care costs and claim patients\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n

A 2016 national study<\/a> found one in four patients were harmed by hospital errors.<\/p>\n

Two hospitals were not graded due to insufficient data: Bergen New Bridge in Paramus and The Heights University Hospital, formerly CarePoint Health Christ Hospital in Jersey City, which is in serious economic trouble.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dustin M. Riccio, a physician and president and CEO for St. Joseph\u2019s Health, noted this was the third consecutive time St. Joseph\u2019s Wayne Medical Center has earned an \u201cA\u201d grade, and the second for St. Joseph\u2019s University Medical Center in Paterson.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur patients are at the heart of everything we do,\u201d Riccio said. \u201cThe scores reflect St. Joseph\u2019s rigorous commitment to excellence from our entire team and the excellent care provided by our physicians, nurses and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are 17 hospitals that have received consecutive A\u2019s for at least five rounds. They are: Community Medical Center, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, Jersey Shore Medical Center, Ocean University Medical Center, Hunterdon Medical Center, Inspira Medical Center in Elmer and Mullica Hill, Jefferson Washington Township Hospital, Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rahway, St. Luke\u2019s Warren Campus, St. Mary\u2019s General Hospital, Virtua Marlton Hospital and Virtua Voorhees Hospital.<\/p>\n

Utah ranked first for the fifth consecutive grading period. The top five scoring states are Utah, Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut and North Carolina. No hospitals in Iowa, North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming earned an A, according to Leapfrog\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n
