The solo show will be the British painter\u2019s first in the northern Italian city and will coincide with the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/venice-biennale\/\" id=\"auto-tag_venice-biennale\" data-tag=\"venice-biennale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venice Biennale<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/gagosian\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gagosian\" data-tag=\"gagosian\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gagosian<\/a>, the mega-gallery which represents Saville, is supporting the exhibtion.<\/p>\n<p>Ca\u2019 Pesaro is a Baroque marble palace turned art museum facing Venice\u2019s Grand Canal. <\/p>\n<p>There has been sustained market demand for Saville\u2019s work over the last decade at least, and she broke the auction record for a living female artist in 2018 when her 1992 self-portrait Propped sold for \u00a39.5 million at Sotheby\u2019s in London. (Photo by Zeynep Demir Aslim\/Anadolu via Getty Images)\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOver the last 12 months, her institutional recognition has skyrocketed; she has had three major museum shows at London\u2019s National Portrait Gallery, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVenice represents a place where art is an intrinsic part of everyday life and where the Biennale artists of today sit in dialogue with these great Venetian artworks,\u201d Saville said in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s a great honour to have the opportunity to exhibit in Venice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition at Ca\u2019 Pesaro will be curated by Elisabetta Barisoni and will run from March 28 to November 26, 2026. It will comprise 30 or so paintings and \u201caim to document the development of Saville\u2019s work by tracing her career from her beginnings in the 1990s to the present day,\u201d the museum said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaville\u2019s practice is deeply rooted in the history of painting, and at Ca\u2019 Pesaro her monumental canvases will engage in dialogue with the great painters of the past present in Venice, creating a unique encounter between contemporary painting and the city\u2019s artistic heritage,\u201d the museum added. \u201cSaville\u2019s relationship with the masters of the past, particularly the Italians, centers on the strong connection she continues to maintain with the Venetian School of painting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ca\u2019 Pesaro\u2019s permanent collection holds a number of works by 20th-century abstract artists who have impacted Saville\u2019s practice, including Cy Twombly. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis exhibition marks Jenny Saville\u2019s return to Venice, a city she loves, has visited many times, and is rich in the work of the old Venetian masters that she has studied for many years,\u201d Barisoni said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The final room of the exhibition will display a previously unseen series of works that Saville has created \u201cin homage to the lagoon city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI think for all contemporary painters who look at Old Masters, the Old Masters are contemporary to them,\u201d Saville told The Art Newspaper earlier this year. \u201cYou only have to go and see the Titian room at the National Gallery, it\u2019s just sensational. They come alive in every era, and they mean something different to each era of painters that are around at that time.
