FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — It’s important for men to take charge of their health.<\/p>\n
“Men need a little bit of a community,” said Dr. Sami Mostafa, a urologist with California Urology. “I think a little bit of dismantling any stigma and having a community, a non-judgmental community, is really key to men’s health.”<\/p>\n
Numbers from the CDC showed that in 2023, nearly 15% of men over the age of 18 were in fair or poor health. The agency also reported that one of the leading causes of death for men included cancer.<\/p>\n
That’s why getting prostate cancer screenings is one way for men to be proactive in their health.<\/p>\n
“Globally, it affects about 1 in 8 men, which is about 12%,” said Dr. Mostafa. “That’s our fathers, our brothers or even ourselves sometimes.”<\/p>\n
Over the summer, cCare partnered with California Urology and Central Valley Medical & Women’s Imaging to expand healthcare access to Central California. This move provides an in-house network for all patients who might be dealing with different kinds of cancer diagnoses.<\/p>\n
“Where patients could just focus on themselves and didn’t have to worry about so much of the logistics of finding a surgeon,” said Dr. Mostafa. “Where do I see them? What about the oncologist?”<\/p>\n
Doctors recommend prostate screenings start between 55 and 69 years old. Dr. Mostafa says men can get screened through blood tests or using advanced tech.<\/p>\n
“These days, we have advanced technology,” said Dr. Mostafa. “We have MRIs these days that can catch about 85% of clinically significant cancers.”<\/p>\n
Because when you catch a problem early, doctors say it’s more treatable and the treatments are much more successful.<\/p>\n
