In this week’s comments update, readers are discussing the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art in China<\/a>,\u00a0designed by BIG<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Located along the Jinji Lake waterfront in Suzhou, the museum<\/a> comprises 12 pavilions under a continuous roof informed by the tiled eaves of traditional Chinese architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Looks quite interesting when seen from a helicopter”<\/p>\n

Commenters were at odds over the roof design, which is clad warm-toned stainless steel.<\/p>\n

“It looks quite interesting when seen from a helicopter, but rather monotonous at ground level,” wrote Alfred Hitchcock<\/a>. “I’m guessing most visitors won’t be taking a helicopter flight.”<\/p>\n

Heywood Floyd<\/a> was torn, calling the structure “typically fussy from above as a result of BIG’s fixation on roof design” before adding “but the interiors are interesting”. They argued that “the ceiling design and varying heights create a nice hierarchy of spaces”.<\/p>\n

“I prefer the Jinji lake pavilion just down the street, also by BIG, but this one is a close second,” contributed HonestlyWhocares<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, commenter Design Junkie<\/a> weighed in to defend the project, declaring “I’ll leave the haters at the door \u2013 that roofline is slick.”<\/p>\n

Also stirring up debate in the comments section this week was a wearable smartphone carrier that stretches to hold any iPhone<\/a>, launched by Issey Miyake<\/a> and Apple<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Readers were far from impressed. “More crap for crap’s sake,” determined RK<\/a>. “We’re doing a great job of destroying the planet with mindless consumption of items that no one needs \u2013 but I’m sure we can still do better.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Soli Deo Gloria<\/a> pointed out that it was a “nice big target for mobile phone thieves”.<\/p>\n

Other commenters were taken aback by the price tag. “The biggest issue I have with this is the price \u2013 the short bag is $150 and the long shoulder bag retails for $230,” wrote Vandra<\/a>. “For an elongated sock,” they declared.<\/p>\n

Commenters also struggled to reach a consensus about a mixed-use development on the site of an early 20th-century slaughterhouse in Tennessee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jacob Volanski<\/a> called it “thoughtful, contextual work”, while Pa Varreon<\/a> thought it was “very smart reuse of ruined buildings”.<\/p>\n

“This is a really superb and somewhat bold example of adaptive reuse,” agreed Jim Anggrabright<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For Chris<\/a>, “my gut reaction is that the new additions are overshadowed by just how good the preservation of the existing is.”<\/p>\n

On the same page was The Discreet Architect<\/a>, writing “the re-use aspect of this looks amazing: the new office building not so much.”<\/p>\n
