{"id":135996,"date":"2025-11-16T07:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T07:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/135996\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T07:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T07:59:09","slug":"taiwanese-restaurant-featured-in-michelins-first-philippines-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/135996\/","title":{"rendered":"Taiwanese restaurant featured in Michelin&#8217;s first Philippines guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quezon, Philippines, Nov. 16 (CNA) A home-style restaurant opened by a Taiwanese woman in Quezon City in Metro Manila has been featured in the first-ever Michelin Guide honoring exceptional restaurants in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant, Fong Wei Wu (\u8c50\u5473\u5c4b), was one of 74 eateries to receive a &#8220;Michelin Selected&#8221; honor in the guide, while one restaurant received two Michelin stars, eight received one star, and 25 were awarded a &#8220;Bib Gourmand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The guide, which was limited to restaurants in Metro Manila and Cebu, was published on Oct. 30.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview, Feng Wei Wu&#8217;s owner and chef, Linda, told CNA that as a restaurateur in her 60s, receiving an affirmation of this kind was &#8220;indescribable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I got the news, I thought my employees were joking with me,&#8221; she said. &#8220;When they told me it was the truth, I broke out in goosebumps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Linda said she came to the Philippines in 2000 so that her daughter, who had just graduated from junior high school, could improve her English.<\/p>\n<p>During the five years she spent accompanying her daughter, she said, her love of cooking and abundant free time led her to open a restaurant, which started with classic Taiwanese dishes like beef noodle soup, pork ribs with rice, and braised pork rice.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her restaurant&#8217;s unexpected beginning and the countless difficulties of opening a business in another country, Linda said she was determined to persevere and make it a success.<\/p>\n<p>To improve her cooking, she said, she traveled to attend Taiwanese cooking classes organized by the Overseas Community Affairs Council and taught by top Taiwanese chefs.<\/p>\n<p>She also imports many of her ingredients &#8212; including soy sauce, sesame sauce, vinegar, doubanjiang (broad bean paste), fried shallots and zha cai (pickled mustard tuber) &#8212; directly from Taiwan, insisting that the higher cost is worth it to maintain an authentic flavor.<\/p>\n<p>In its introduction, the Michelin Guide refers to Fong Wei Wu as a &#8220;cosy family-run spot serv[ing] home-style Taiwanese food,&#8221; with a daily-changing spread of 15-20 dishes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t miss the fried bihon &#8212; rice noodles stir-fried with pork and cabbage [that] are topped with flavorsome minced pork to create a harmony of soy umami and vegetable sweetness,&#8221; the guide recommends.<\/p>\n<p>Fong Wei Wu is located at 82 Banawe Street corner Samat Street, Quezon &#8212; Metro Manila.<\/p>\n<p class=\"noMarginB\">(By Emerson Lim and Matthew Mazzetta) <\/p>\n<p class=\"noMarginB\">Enditem\/ls<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Quezon, Philippines, Nov. 16 (CNA) A home-style restaurant opened by a Taiwanese woman in Quezon City in Metro&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":135997,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[146,85,46,4346],"class_list":["post-135996","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entertainment","tag-entertainment","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-newsarticle"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/135996","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=135996"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/135996\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/135997"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=135996"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=135996"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=135996"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
