noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atelier Tao+C<\/a> has designed a cafe for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/blue-bottle-coffee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Bottle Coffee<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/shanghai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shanghai<\/a>&#8216;s West Bund waterfront, featuring wooden canopies stretched out above a prefabricated concrete counter.<\/p>\n<p>The cafe overlooks a historic shipyard in West Bund, forming part of a post-industrial site on the Huangpu River that once contained Asia&#8217;s largest cement factory.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268780 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/blue-bottle-coffee-atelier-taoc-shanghai_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x801.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Bottle Coffee at West Bund by Atelier Tao+C\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2222\"  \/>Atelier Tao+C has completed the Blue Bottle Coffee at West Bund<\/p>\n<p>Dutch firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/07\/30\/gate-m-west-bund-dream-center-shanghai-mvrdv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MVRDV&#8217;s masterplan for the redeveloped site<\/a> combines several preserved industrial structures with modern interventions containing cultural and leisure facilities alongside new public spaces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ateliertaoc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atelier Tao+C<\/a>&#8216;s project, which features on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\/2025\/shortlists\/interiors\/bar-and-cafe-interior\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shortlist for Dezeen Awards 2025<\/a>, aims to reflect the site&#8217;s history and its current context alongside food markets, restaurants and event spaces, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/07\/17\/schmidt-hammer-lassen-west-bund-grand-theatre-shanghai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schmidt Hammer Lassen&#8217;s West Bund Grand Theatre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268782 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/blue-bottle-coffee-atelier-taoc-shanghai_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Wooden table with a hole in the middle\" the industrial past of the site with the present urban context, while providing a welcoming space for coffee lovers,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the cafe, a pair of slanted timber columns appear to prop up soaring white &#8220;canvases&#8221; that divide the space while adding a sense of height and lightness.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268776 spotlights while concealing important mechanical and electrical services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The timber canvases solve spatial and technical challenges,&#8221; the studio said. &#8220;They give an outdoor feeling to the interior and frame river views, transforming a functional ceiling into an experiential and environmental mediator.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a Coffee\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the interior, Douglas fir panelling and wooden furnishings provide a warm contrast to the polished concrete floor and prefabricated concrete bar.<\/p>\n<p>The laminated wood panels are used for display shelves and partitions that separate the kitchen, located in one corner of the unit, from the rest of the space.<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>They integrate spotlights and disguise mechanical and electrical services<\/p>\n<p>Bespoke benches positioned around the cafe&#8217;s perimeter combine cast-concrete bases with seats made from timber panels that slot together.<\/p>\n<p>The coffee bar and benches were fabricated off-site and then put together in the cafe to minimise construction waste and enable precise assembly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268783 size-full\" views of the river through the concrete-and-steel framework of the historic cement factory.<\/p>\n<p>The coffee shop forms part of the Gate M West Bund Dream Center site, combining parts of the existing factory with structures from a previous development proposal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268778 size-full\" provided the catalyst for making this part of the river accessible to the city&#8217;s residents.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the Dream Center development, local architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2015\/06\/07\/shanghai-art-long-museum-west-bund-atelier-deshaus-vaulted-columns-coal-industrial-relic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atelier Deshaus overhauled existing buildings to the north of the site<\/a>, while landscape architecture studio Field Operations oversaw the public realm overlooking the waterfront.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by
