An AI<\/a>-generated country track has hit the Number One spot on a US Billboard singles chart.<\/p>\n

\u2018Walk My Walk\u2019, released by AI artist Breaking Rust, is currently at the top of Billboard\u2018s Country Digital Songs sales chart<\/a>, after gaining over three million streams on Spotify<\/a> in less than a month.<\/p>\n

The track also tops Spotify\u2019s \u2018Viral 50\u2019 chart in the US, while another of the \u201cband\u2019s\u201d tracks, \u2018Livin\u2019 on Borrowed Time\u2019, has reached Number Five in the same chart, with over four million streams on the platform.<\/p>\n

The creator of Breaking Rust has yet to reveal their identity, but an official TikTok page<\/a> for them has garnered close to 200,000 followers, with \u2018Walk My Walk\u2019 featuring in over 150,000 videos on the platform.<\/p>\n

News of AI-generated artists garnering huge streaming figures has become increasingly common. Earlier this year, an AI-generated \u2018band\u2019 called The Velvet Sundown made headlines after\u00a0gaining around 400,000 monthly Spotify listeners<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 despite only existing for less than a month.\u00a0A \u2018spokesperson\u2019 for the viral act later admitted that he was running a hoax aimed at \u201cthe media\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for how The Velvet Sundown got so many listeners on Spotify, he said: \u201cI know we got on some playlists that just have like tons of followers, and it seems to have spiralled from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, AI-generated artist Xania Monet has been in the headlines for\u00a0signing a multimillion-dollar record deal<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0becoming the first AI artist to chart on the US Billboard rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The creator of Monet, Mississippi poet and designer Telisha \u201cNikki\u201d Jones, has since spoken out in her first interview<\/a>, saying she looks at Monet \u201cas a real person\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jones also addressed the controversy surrounding Monet\u2019s success, saying: \u201cAny time something new comes about and it challenges the norm and challenges what we\u2019re used to, you\u2019re going to get strong reactions behind it\u201d<\/p>\n

Kehlani has previously hit out at the success of Monet<\/a>, telling fans on TikTok the proliferation of AI in music was \u201cso beyond out of our control.\u201d\u00a0She went on to highlight the power of AI to create fully formed songs without users having to \u201ccredit anyone\u201d involved in making the copyrighted works on which such generative music systems are trained.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing and no one on Earth will ever be able to justify AI to me,\u201d she added. Other critics of the tech include\u00a0Mac DeMarco<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0SZA<\/a>, while\u00a0ABBA\u2018s Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus called AI \u201csuch a great tool\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, back in September, Cardiff rock group Holding Absence hit out at an AI \u2018band\u2019 which had overtaken their streaming figures<\/a> on Spotify<\/a>. Frontman Lucas Woodland wrote on Twitter\/X: \u201cSo, an AI \u2018band\u2019 who cite us as an influence (ie, it\u2019s modelled off our music) have just overtaken us on Spotify, in only TWO months.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vocalist continued: \u201cIt\u2019s shocking, it\u2019s disheartening, it\u2019s insulting \u2013 most importantly \u2013 it\u2019s a wake up call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, audiences are reportedly finding it difficult to distinguish between \u201creal\u201d and AI music, with a new report from French streaming service Deezer finding that 97 per cent of people \u201ccan\u2019t tell the difference\u201d between the two.<\/p>\n

The \u201cfirst-of-its-kind\u201d survey<\/a> also found that only 19 per cent said they felt that they could trust AI, while another 51 per cent said they believe the use of AI in music production could lead to low-quality and \u201cgeneric\u201d sounding music.<\/p>\n

The new stats come during a period of continued controversy for AI technology in the music industry, with a recent study sharing the stark warning that\u00a0people working in music are likely to lose a quarter of their income to Artificial Intelligence over the next four years.<\/a><\/p>\n

In September,\u00a0Spotify confirmed that it was cracking down on AI by removing 75million \u201cspammy tracks\u201d and targeting impersonators<\/a>. The statement, titled \u2018Spotify Strengthens AI Protections For Artists, Songwriters, And Producers\u2019, added: \u201cAI technology is evolving fast, and we\u2019ll continue to roll out new policies frequently.\u201d<\/p>\n

This followed a report claiming that\u00a0AI-generated songs were being uploaded to dead musicians\u2019 Spotify profiles without permission<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paul McCartney<\/a>,\u00a0Kate Bush<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Elton John<\/a>\u00a0are among the big British artists to have\u00a0urged Keir Starmer to protect the work of creatives<\/a>\u00a0back in September. This came after\u00a0the Prime Minister told\u00a0NME<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s very important we protect creativity, and we\u2019re brilliant at creativity in this country \u2013 we punch well above our weight within the country and globally, and we\u2019re all very proud of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to get the balance right. That\u2019s why we did a long and important consultation, and we\u2019re going through the responses of that consultation now. So it is a question of getting the balance right.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments followed a\u00a0call on the UK government from various major acts to change copyright laws to combat the tech<\/a>\u00a0as it progresses rapidly.\u00a0Elton John claimed in January that AI would \u201cdilute and threaten young artists\u2019 earnings\u201d<\/a>, while backing\u00a0criticism from Paul McCartney<\/a>.<\/p>\n
