What will our homes look like in 2026? Posed like this, the question feels somewhat mystical. We haven\u2019t consulted a clairvoyant for the answer, however. No, to solve this query, we\u2019ve gone to designers<\/a> and interiors experts for their predictions. <\/p>\n

The question, though not mystical, is indicative of a wider truth. Homes<\/a>, after all, are often a reflection of not just ourselves but of the broader times we live in. <\/p>\n

“We\u2019re unconsciously absorbing everything around us,” Penny Sparke<\/a>, professor of design history at Kingston University, tells us. “Adverts, magazines<\/a>, TV. It\u2019s all going in. Whether we\u2019re responding to it is another matter. But it\u2019s certainly all going in, in terms of the types of things that we consume and buy.”<\/p>\n

Look at any given room in history and you will likely be able to see something of the period reflected in it. In the 1960s, for instance, Penny tells us that there was a desire amongst many young people to be “of the moment” and so when it came to decorating, some sought bold colours<\/a> and new materials that would allow them to shed themselves of ‘conventional’ past choices. <\/p>\n

For their 2026 predictions, many of the experts we spoke to expect a push towards craftsmanship<\/a> and authenticity in interiors. We asked Penny if, in an age of AI and mass-produced content, could this really be considered a coincidence?<\/p>\n

“One offsets the other,” she says. “The more we feel we\u2019re being manipulated, the more we want to express ourselves individually to show that we\u2019re in control. The home is where we do it because that is where we express ourselves.”<\/p>\n

With this, it\u2019s not just a question of “how will our homes look in 2026?” \u2013 but, rather, what versions of ourselves will we want to project?<\/p>\n

“The home is the place where we express ourselves more than anywhere else,” Penny says. “Our clothes<\/a> are our way of identifying ourselves in the public sphere but in the private sphere we can do it as much as we want. We can express ourselves in where we put our ornaments<\/a> \u2013 in where we put our things.”<\/p>\n

With this in mind, here\u2019s what designers and interiors experts are predicting our homes will look like in 2026\u2026 <\/p>\n

1. More sensory spaces\"nkuku\"pinterest\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Over the last few years, we\u2019ve seen designers consider how our interiors can not only cater to our sight \u2013 but to our other senses<\/a> as well. From listening bars to sensory exhibitions, it\u2019s become something of a hot topic in the world of interior design. <\/p>\n

“2026 is shaping up to be a year defined by emotion, texture and individuality,” Tori Young, design creative lead at HollandGreen<\/a> tells us. “Across interiors, we\u2019re seeing a move toward deeply personal, sensorial spaces that feel both timeless and expressive.”<\/p>\n

For Lauren, of Lauren Gilberthorpe Interiors<\/a>, she sees bathrooms as a place where this could happen. “Bathrooms<\/a> are becoming fully sensory spaces, and clay baths<\/a> are central to this,” Lauren says. “My favourites are from Studio Laho, which have an understated sculptural form and a beautifully textured finish.”<\/p>\n

2. Earthy hues are set to dominate \"marlborough\"pinterest\"<\/a><\/p>\n

From Pantone\u2019s Mocha Mousse being declared the ‘colour of the year’ to 1970s colour palettes taking over interiors, in many ways, 2025 has been the year of the colour brown<\/a>. Of the experts we spoke to, some predicted the continued popularity of earthy<\/a> hues \u2013 only this time, moving beyond variations of mocha. <\/p>\n

“As we look to 2026, British interiors are set to embrace a colour palette that’s inspired by nature. Earthy hues, from rich terracottas and soft clays, through to muted mosses and warm taupes, will dominate walls<\/a>, fabrics and home furnishings,” says Anna Hill, brand director and colour consultant at Fenwick & Tilbrook<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Kunal Trehan, interior designer and founder of Touched Interiors<\/a>, agrees, telling us that in 2026, “colour will become bolder, shifting from safe neutrals to earthy reds, ochres, deep greens and plum tones.” <\/p>\n

When explaining the popularity behind the trend, Anna tells us that “beyond looks, earthy colours carry an emotional resonance, providing a quiet<\/a> counter-balance to the fast-paced, digital world we live in.”<\/p>\n

3. Pattern is so back\"lauren\"pinterest\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After the recent popularity of “quiet luxury” interiors, in the last year or so we’ve been seeing a shift towards louder, bolder interiors. From pattern<\/a>-drenching to wallpapering your ceiling, people are finding more and more ways to embrace bold prints at home. <\/p>\n

“Pattern and print<\/a> will return,” predicts Kunal. “From stripes and checks to soft florals, but used with restraint to add personality rather than overwhelm,” he says. Lauren goes a step further, predicting “pattern on pattern” in 2026. <\/p>\n

She also suspects that wallpaper<\/a> will experience a resurgence, “particularly on ceilings, in bookcases or window nooks, and even combined with matching window treatments. These areas offer a chance to be playful or whimsical without overwhelming the home,” she says. <\/p>\n

4. Organic shapes\"autumnal\"pinterest\"<\/a><\/p>\n

From cocooning sofas to nature<\/a>-inspired shapes, many of the experts we spoke to also predicted the popularity of curved and organic furniture<\/a> in 2026. “Curves are defining interiors in 2026, reflecting a growing desire for spaces that feel nurturing, fluid and organic,” Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture Village<\/a> tells us. <\/p>\n

“In 2026, furniture with organic, curved forms is taking centre stage as people seek to reconnect with nature and tactility in their interiors,” Magdalena Gierasinska, head of product and displays at Barker & Stonehouse<\/a>, tells us. <\/p>\n

Laura Migales, interior design and visual merchandising lead at Cult Furniture<\/a>, explains the popularity behind the trend. “The biophilia hypothesis suggests that humans are hard-wired to seek connections to the natural world<\/a>,” she tells us. It’s for this reason, she says, that we tend to be drawn to curved and flowing lines in furniture as they reflect the shapes of the natural world. <\/p>\n

5. Craftsmanship

Kunal also predicts that the craft<\/a> revival will strengthen in 2026, “with handmade ceramics, artisanal joinery and natural stone taking centre stage. People are craving pieces that feel human and enduring,” he says. For Torri, this movement towards tactility and craftsmanship is a “celebration of the human hand in an increasingly digital world.”<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s also a real movement emerging around playful, imaginative design details that celebrate individuality and the art of true craftsmanship,” says designer Sarah Southwell<\/a>. While Simon Mayhew, founder and interior designer, TXTURED<\/a>, tells us that he sees clients “moving away from showy finishes toward what feels authentic, tactile and enduring.”<\/p>\n

“Interiors will move away from perfect, polished finishes and towards pieces that show character<\/a> and authenticity,” predicts Josh Branigan, a furniture and home interiors expert at Cuckooland<\/a>. “Every piece will tell a story, from the grain of timber to the slight imperfection of a handmade vase, grounding spaces with honesty and charm.”
<\/p>\n

6. Wellness continues to dominate\"rustic\"pinterest\"<\/a>DFSHB Filip Sideboard at DFS<\/a><\/p>\n

The experts we consulted also predicted wellness would continue to be an important influence on interior design next year. “We recently conducted a survey that found that 41% of people believe they look at their mobile phones too much \u2013 54% doing so for three hours or more every day,” Kellie Wyles, head of upholstery at DFS<\/a>, tells us. <\/p>\n

“Activities such as reading<\/a>, gardening<\/a> and even board games are all now popular hobbies to help us switch off,” Kellie says. “And this shift is being reflected in the design of our homes \u2013 with a growing desire for dedicated spaces where we can unplug and enjoy these activities without screens or tech.”<\/p>\n

Kunal tells us that though not all ideas will translate into most households, “what will genuinely take hold are the textural and emotional elements: deeper colour palettes, crafted details, layered fabrics and spaces that prioritise wellbeing<\/a>.”
