The London fashion scene is well-known for its widely successful roster of independent brands<\/a>, much-loved by the city’s influential dressers and magazine editors, from Rixo<\/a> to Me+Em<\/a> and Aligne. But there’s one brand that has continued to experience exceptional favour in the wardrobes of those in-the-know \u2013 as well as members of the royal family \u2013 since its inception in 2017.<\/p>\n

With Nothing Underneath, also known as WNU, was founded by Pip Durrel<\/a> while she was still working as a magazine editor. Durrel began with a curated edit of button-down shirts which formed WNU’s foundations \u2014 and remain its raison d’etre \u2014 but its offering now expands to suits and tailoring, knitwear, coats and beyond.<\/p>\n

In the eight years since its launch, the brand has gone on to garner a loyal clientele who are willing to queue for hours at the mere mention of a sample sale, and is now stocked at London’s leading establishments, Liberty and Harrods. In 2022, it achieved B-Corp certification, keeping sustainability at the fore of its identity.<\/p>\n

“Honestly there wasn’t one,” Durrel says when we ask about her founding vision for the brand. “I just wanted beautifully cut, well made shirts, at a reasonable price. The brand grew organically and those principles still stand true today but with a broader product offering \u2014 we look to make beautiful pieces to stand the test of time.”<\/p>\n

It’s a north star that’s led the brand to unparalleled success in under a decade, with pieces worn by the royal family, including the Princess of Wales<\/a> and the Duchess of Sussex<\/a>, who owns styles including the Boyfriend fine poplin midnight stripe<\/a> and Boyfriend linen sky blue & white stripe shirt.<\/a><\/p>\n

“They are wonderful ambassadors and generate incredible growth metrics for any brand they touch,” says Durrel. “People talk about soft power when it comes to the royal family \u2014 its intangible influence in a positive manner on this country \u2014 and that’s one of the many reasons I am a royalist. Soft power in the retail economy is no bad thing.” <\/p>\n

A royal seal of approval, whether through the official Royal Warrant or through a more organic avenue, such as Kate and Meghan’s personally-owned pieces, is an unrivalled credential in the modern retail space, especially for independent brands such as WNU; just look at its Jura cardigan, worn by the Princess of Wales last month<\/a> and which, subject to ‘the Kate effect’, has completely sold out. <\/p>\n

Durell says there is no secret formula to With Nothing Underneath’s success, but there’s no doubt that the founder possesses a singular discernment for tapping into the heart of British style in a way that’s refreshingly new and positioned at a mid-range price point. “We really look to the heritage of Britain when coming up with the season’s inspiration – architecture, art, literature – we are living in a rich library of inspiration,” she shares. “Taking those ideas and that nostalgia of the past and bringing it to the modern day woman is a true joy.”<\/p>\n

That they share royal wardrobe space with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Erdem and Givenchy, is quite the testament to the label’s quality and vision; WNU’s pieces are simple, elevated and timeless, something that echoes not only with Kate and Meghan’s signature style, but a larger appreciation for this approach to dressing. “The nonchalance and playful British attitude that WNU brings speaks to all ages,” says Durell. “An effortlessly undone shirt that takes you from day to night that is perfectly cut, and easy to wear?
