A recent study by <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.fas.harvard.edu\/people\/avi-loeb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Avi Loeb<\/a>, an astrophysicist at Harvard University, proposes a new theory: the passing of a star, HD 7977, could have disturbed the Oort Cloud, a huge, icy region at the edge of the solar system, sending comets toward Earth and potentially sparking a significant comet shower. <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the Oort Cloud, and How Can Stars Affect It?<\/p>\n<p>The Oort Cloud is a vast, distant region of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/01\/discovery-mysterious-icy-balls-space\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"76630\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">icy bodies <\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2024\/07\/new-study-suggests-dark-comets-water-earth\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6591\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> comets<\/a> that extends far beyond the orbit of Pluto. <a href=\"https:\/\/avi-loeb.medium.com\/did-the-passage-of-the-star-hd7977-trigger-a-major-comet-shower-on-earth-2-5-million-years-ago-f2074de53de1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">According to the study<\/a>, when a star passes too close to this region, its gravity can disturb the orbits of the comets, sending them flying toward the inner solar system. Loeb and his team focused on HD 7977, a star that passed close to the<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/oort-cloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Oort Cloud<\/a> about 2.5 million years ago, around the time humans were first emerging on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Their research shows that the gravitational pull of HD 7977 could have caused some of the comets in the Oort Cloud to move into the inner solar system. This increase in comet activity could have contributed to significant environmental changes on Earth during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition, which marked the beginning of the ice ages.<\/p>\n<p>How Did the Star\u2019s Passage Affect the Oort Cloud?<\/p>\n<p>To understand just how impactful this star\u2019s passage might have been, the team ran simulations of HD 7977\u2019s flyby and its effect on the Oort Cloud. The results showed that depending on the star\u2019s distance from the Sun, ranging from about 2,300 to 13,000 AU, the likelihood of comets hitting Earth increased significantly.
